Abel Pennington was born on August 20, 1789 in SC. (5) He died on October 16, 1865 in Webbville, Lawrence Co., KY. He was buried in Webbville, Lawrence Co., KY, Webbville Cem.. Abel served in the War of 1812, and applied for bounty land in April 1855 at age 65, and a resident of Lawrence Co., KY. He had also applied in 1851. He said he had enlisted in 1812 in Harlan Co., KY. His wife applied for pension in 1871, said she was Elizabeth Smith, m. in Harlan Co., KY. (6) Jan. 1814, that she was now 80. A John Pennington (age 76) and Rachel Pennington (age 73) vouched for them.

Source: Pennington Pedigrees 14-1, p. 71: Abel, son of William and Abigail Caudill Pennington has been listed by Pennington Pedigrees as Abel #4. He was born in South Carolina in 1789. He lived with his family in Lee County, Virginia and then Knox County, Kentucky. When Knox County was divided, the section they lived in became Harlan County. He served in the War of 1812 as a Kentucky Volunteer and when he returned to Harlan County, he married Elizabeth Smith in 1814. He was granted much land in Harlan County on the Cumberland River. He and Elizabeth were members of the Old Oven Fork Church. In 1833 they and most of the rest of this family moved to Lawrence County, Kentucky. Here he applied for and received land grants in both Lawrence and Elliott Counties.

His family is partially listed in the Kelly Bible (Pennington Pedigrees Vol. 13, No. 1). They are listed again in the same issue in the Elliott County deeds, but not all are mentioned.

Abel left a great deal of land. Each son also gained land grants. When William died, he left his land to his wife Nancy Kelly. We are lucky to have his will. He does not mention his children. Jonathan had moved to Missouri before he died. A deed in favor of Abel (which Abel we do not know) was filed in Lawrence County, Kentucky in 1859 listing LaFayette County, Missouri as Jonathan's address. This may have been his father, as Abel #4 was still alive. It also may have been a nephew as William and Nancy's son Abel was 19 years old by this time. James and Celia Harris' son Abel would only have been 9 years old -- not a likely prospect. Jonathan apparently died shortly after this as he is not listed in the Missouri nor Kentucky census of 1860. He is mentioned in the Elliott County deeds and they refer to the estate of Jonathan Pennington, so he did not deed all of his land before he died. All of the family that are listed in these deeds lived in Missouri by the time of the settlement, except Mary Ann. They all sold their property share to Jonathan Gallion, father-in-law of John K., son of William and Nancy.

Pennington Pedigrees 13-2, p. 38: In 1812 Abel enlisted in Garret County, Kentucky Volunteers at Harlan, Kentucky for a six month term. He received his discharge in 1813 and returned to Harlan to marry Elizabeth Smith in 1814. She is thought to be the daughter of Jonathon Smith. Abel got a land grant of 100 acres on the Poor Fork of the Cumberland River. Then in 1833 he applied for land in Lawrence County. In 1848 he received another 50 acres. In 1856 he received 4 grants of 200 acres, 131 acres, 125 acres, and 69 acres...In 1871, Elizabeth

Smith Pennington filed for Abel's pension for his war service. She received $12 a month, but died in 1872 so she didn't get to enjoy such luxury.
