Aaron Hewes Born: 1705, Somerset County, New Jersey Marriage: Providence Worth 4 Mar 1727, Chesterfield MM, Burlington County, New Jersey Died: 17 Jul 1753, Somerset County, New Jersey, at age 48 Buried: Friends Burying Ground, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Aaron married Providence Worth, daughter of Joseph Worth and Sarah Giles, on 4 Mar 1727 in Chesterfield MM, Burlington County, New Jersey. (Providence Worth was born on 16 Apr 1704 and died on 19 Sep 1788.)
Aaron Hewes (1700 - 28 September 1753 Gregorian Calendar) was the father of Joseph Hewes one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The eleventh of twelve children of William Hewes and Sarah Bezer, Aaron Hewes was born near Concordville, Delaware County, Pennsylvania near land that his grandfather settled on circa 1678.
Contrary to the story that initially appeared in Vol VII of a series of books in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence Aaron Hewes was not from Connecticut. The genealogical evidence solidly contradicts that claim.
Aaron Hewes and Providence Worth, in April and May of 1727 (the 2nd month by the Julian Calendar) declared their intentions to marry at the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting at Crosswicks, New Jersey. The two declarations of their intention to marry satisfies Quaker requirements for marriage. Quaker discipline also required Hewes to present a certificate from his home meeting at Concord, Pennsylvania indicating that since his life was in accordance with Quaker standards, he had his parents consent and had no ties to other women he was at liberty to marry.
On the 1st day of the 4th month, 1727 (June by the modern calendar) it was reported to the Monthly Meeting that the marriage was orderly accomplished. Since we do not have the marriage record we do not know its exact date but know that it was in May of 1709.
