Anita

I love the way you have organized this. Thank you so much.

Most of my own ancestors -- that I know about -- are Kentucky regiments and I don't know the battles. You're inspiring me to learn my "for the North side" of the tree (now that Geni found me my Puritan ancestors!) and research their regiments and battles as well.

The main tool I've used so far is this one:

Thank you Erica. I just hope more people join in.

Anita I just want to double check with you on naming format for the first CSA unit I think in the Project -- it's not a very exciting one but its my direct ancestor.

Is this OK?

16th Arkansas Infantry, US Civil War - CSA

Or better written out? Confederate States Army?

4/20/2011 at 7:06 PM

Actually, we hadn't added the CSA/USA designation on the units, I think because the state pretty much stated it. Your choice if you want to include it, but definitely use the abbreviation (CSA) so searching is easier.

This site has a lot of info...more than the Michigan site.... I am going to look for a master for all Confederate states... thanks for the push Erica!

Erica, have you started the Arkansas Infantry project yet? I think they fought in battles with Cherokee Gen. Stand Watie?!

4/21/2011 at 4:32 AM

Also for the "divided states" Anita - with units for the North and other units for the South. And of course West Virginia is the classic example.

Kwame was Arkansas infantry with or against Gen Watie?

4/21/2011 at 10:48 AM

Missouri and kentucky also had units on both sides.

Arkansas was Confederate for the most part. So they were with Gen. Watie.

The site http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm is nice but it does not have the birth dates. I used the state sites that normally have the card itself.

I typed in some of my relatives in the above site and it looks like one of them was 4 people when in fact he was transfered 4 times, Since many don't have the middle name, usung the date of birth and where joined from the state sites works better, but the link you gave does give you a place to start. On of my relatives lived in Ilinois but went all the way to Maryland to join. Your site will pick up on that.

I am a Northern girl...no split states up here, sorry!!!!

Erica Howton go ahead and set the standard, I would suggest "16th Arkansas Infantry (CSA), US Civil War", unless you have already done something different, then we will use that as a standard.

Marvin Caulk, (C), there are SO many sites....I was overwhelmed.

I started a Research discussion...let's post sites there that have a lot of information, whether easy to read or not, there, for everyone to use. When it comes to research, the more the merrier! (As long as they are accurate sites!!)

I have one of the most comprehensive sites on line for Civil War research - mostly confederate

www.researchonline.net

I am interested in corroborating with you here on Geni to tie the rosters to the individual profiles.

john

Is this an ad to sell the above info or are you planning on joining the project?

5/15/2011 at 10:08 AM

I do have a book for sell on the 26th North Carolina as well as other units, but my intention here is to corroborate on building a comprehensive project site for this and possibly other units.

5/15/2011 at 2:18 PM

John...you should be able to join any project using the Action button on the project page. If you are unable to to join, you should have a link to request to join.

Welcome...please feel free to create any projects you want/need and to add as many profiles to as many projects as you can.

Thanks!

Well, there were approximately 3,000 units formed for each side in the war and each represents up to 4,000 individuals. I think we have A LOT of ground to cover if we are going to build a comprehensive set of links to the various profiles.

I think I'll first join in the NC 26th Infantry Project. We have several interesting details for this unit - a woman confederate soldier, and at least 4 black confederates, plus the officers were quite distinguished.

I have a roster of the Unit with 3245 names. I'm trying to figure out now how best to start with the names and "stitching" them to the existing profiles on Geni.

5/15/2011 at 3:01 PM

I would suggest you start with your own family members...create projects for the units, battles, armies they were in. If we each work on our own, eventually we will get the battles done, and most of the units...then individuals can be added as they are found.

I follow all of the Civil War projects, so that if I see someone added to the Gettysburg project for example, I can go back in and add them to the Army of the Potomac project, too.....of course...this is all when I have the time.

If we each do a little bit, eventually we will have the vast majority of the battles and units done...then as the projects attract attention, individual users will/can just add profiles to the projects. I don't care if a project sits with only one profile...eventually more will get added!

5/15/2011 at 3:02 PM

As for the names you have, John...just put a link to the roster on the Project page for others to reference as needed.

5/15/2011 at 5:48 PM

John, I can't wait to see the information about the woman soldier and the Black Confederates.

5/25/2011 at 6:05 AM

Donald, rather than tagging the profiles here, please use the action button to assign them to a project...either http://www.geni.com/projects/US-Civil-War-Notables or http://www.geni.com/projects/Other-People-in-the-American-Civil-War, then as you/we learn more about them, projects for their units and battles can be created for them to be tied to.

Thanks!!

Anita,
My 2nd great grandfather, William Aaron Carter was with Co C 16th PA Cav., but I don't know how to add him to the list. I love that you are doing this as we are just beginning our searches.
C M

C.M. First, make sure you are following the project you want to add him to...then on his profile, go to the Action button and choose Add to Project (or you can use the link down next to his About Me info)...then type the name of the project.

I don't think we have a project created for the 16th PA Cav...do you want to tackle that as your first project?? They aren't hard!

In the meantime, add him to the [http://www.geni.com/projects/Other-People-in-the-American-Civil-War Other People in the Civil War] project. That way anyone else who is working the projects can see him and add him in to the appropriate projects. Eventually there will be one for each battle, unit and governmental Army division (i.e. Army of the Potomac) so every soldier can be tied to multiple projects to get a really good feel for what they went thru and the people they went thru it with.

p.s. His profile needs to be public, so if you aren't ready to make it public, just file this for reference for later on!

All....the list of units is getting rather large. What do you think of organizing them by state...either in groups on the main Civil War project page, or as another project?

I am thinking another project... Tie one project per state (two if there were units on each side), then tie the units to the state....that cleans up the massive list on the main project, but still keeps them tied together....

I am thinking the same thing with the Battles...a project for each year to tie to the main project, then the Battle are assigned to a year....

Thoughts????
