I've been on Geni for a while and have read all the FAQs, and I am still a bit mystified about how to initiate a merge. I know how to accept through the Merge Center, but actually suggesting/requesting a merge baffles me. Everything I've read talks about nodes and sidebars and groups and such, and while I'm sure this will make me look stupid, it just doesn't process for me.

Would it be possible for someone to create a visual guide with screencaps on exactly how to do this? Visual guides are standard on a lot of sites, and I'd love it if Geni could join the club, especially since it would make my tree so much tidier. I'd really like to merge [Capt. Ephraim Sawtell all] [Unknown Profile these] [Unknown Profile Ephraim] [Unknown Profile Sawtells], for example, along with [Abigail Sawtell (Farnsworth) all] [Unknown Profile these] [Unknown Profile Abigail] [Unknown Profile Farnsworths], but obviously I'm just not getting it, and I'm hoping some other visually-oriented kind soul on here might know my frustration and have a desire to help others in my sinking, clueless boat. :)

Ack, sorry for the link formatting...I was using the code from the profiles. Guess I didn't need to. :) More evidence of cluelessness, I suppose!

HI Jessica,
I will try to fix your merges, please have a look and let me know if correct

The wiki would probably be the place if users build on it. It's started, but far from complete and does not yet give step-by-step instruction.

Hmmm. Good idea. We actually DO have one Geni user who likes playing with such clips. I'll suggest this to him.

Thanks for all the replies, and especially to Private User for the merges.

Lauri Kreen, thanks for the links; I'll have to explore them some more. I never would have found those since they're not actually on the Geni site. I guess that's what I had in mind -- some type of official "here's how to do things" resource. It's so helpful on other sites, and it seems to me like it would help to answer many questions before they end up being raised here or in help requests. If there's any interest, it might be a good collaborative project for more skilled volunteers to work on.

Thanks again for all the feedback!
