Here's a direct quote from Wikipedia (fetched on 26 October 2010):

His father, John Morton (Senior), was Finnish, who originated from Finland with his great-grandfather, Martti Marttinen (the family's original name, anglicized as Morton), himself a native of Rautalampi, Finland, who had arrived in the Swedish colony of New Sweden in 1654. His mother, Mary Archer, was also of Finnish descent.

There's more information available about John Morton's Finnish roots in other sources,

Here's a link to information about John Morton's ancestry from a U.S. source:

And one more link, now from Finland, where a Researchers' seminar on John Morton took place in June 2010:

Hey that's terrific info. I see his tree / ancestry is not built out. Would you care to have a go at it? Colonialswedes.org is certainly a valid source. I will add you to the Signers Project. I have Mortons in my family tree but I think English ones, no connection to the Signer.

Hi Erica! Thanks for the offer. I guess it's an honour for a Finn to be building John Morton's ancestry in Geni. I'll work on it in the near future - probably not within the next few days as I'm travelling.

It's us who are honored to have a Finn helping track down "Signer" Morton's roots.

When you're ready you might find this tool helpful in getting the Project going. It's a pre-formatted template you can copy and paste into the Project overview.

I should be clearer. What I'm suggesting is a separate project for John Morton's family tree. There are probably enough profiles and merges needed already to warrant a separate Project.

Be sure to add me as a collaborator after you create the Project and hopefully others will join up as well.

To add a collaborator, go to my profile, "more actions" menu, Project Options, add to Project.
