Is "Barbatus" an appellation or a name?

I just modified the profile of Hugues I (Hugh) Comte de Montfort-sur-Risle, I (De Montfort) to have a different display name.

The old one was "Barbatus de Montfort".

I changed it to "Hugues I "Barbatus" de Montfort" - my very uncultured reading of the sources given in "About me" was that it's likely that " Barbatus" was an appellation meaning "Barbarian" or something like that.

Would anyone care to comment? Is there a risk we're mixing up 2 people here?

"Barbatus" means bearded. I can see how, by extension, it might have come to mean a barbarian in some times and places.
