Merge requests

How long is apt to wait for a merge request to be processed by its owner?
I have requests pending from March and April (about twenty)?
It would be nice if Geni would append a date to the pending mergerequests in the list. I know that i can go into my lists and se when i send my request, but it would be easier if it was appended to the list with merge issues.

There is no easy answer. I've have people get back to me after six months.

Now that you're in the Collaboration Pool ( http://www.geni.com/discussions/6000000008539319639 ) you might want to cancel those requests, and then press the Send Request button again. You MIGHT find that you have since gained a collaborator in common with the other manager. This 3rd person could complete the merge for you. After all, this is the whole point of the Pool!

thanks ill try again

Ijust had three merge requests from FARKAS, when i tried, a red box came back stating that i did not have permission to edit the profiles how can this happen?

This can happen when someone else did the merge at the same time, OR he sent you multiple requests for the same merge, in which case YOU are the "other" person.

Lastly, this sometimes happens as a temporary glitch in the system. Try reloading the page and do it again.

Can Geni be refined so as not to bother showing me profiles that only allow me to click the "request to Merge Button" and not the "Merge" button? If I can't complete the Merge, why am I being shown a profile that someone else already requested the manager to merge. It's very redundant and time wasting. How many requests to Merge does it take to get the job done?
Happy New Year.

Chet, you should be seeing fewer of those as time goes on. We used to create a requested merge with no approvals (meaning it needed an approval from each profile / side of the merge) when you resolved conflicts in the tree. This could result in merges appearing in your merge center where even after granting your approval, it still had to wait in the queue until someone from the other side approved it.

We changed the tree conflict flow to use the side-by-side comparisons, which also logs an approval of at least one side of the merge. This means that once these show up in your merge center, one approval should be all that's necessary to complete the merge. So at this point it should only be merges requested from the tree, before last October or so, that don't always complete when you approve them. If that doesn't seem to match your experience, reply here with whatever detail you can, and I'll investigate. And happy new year to you, too!

Mike

You commented: "So at this point it should only be merges requested from the tree, before last October or so, that don't always complete when you approve them. If that doesn't seem to match your experience, reply here with whatever detail you can, and I'll investigate."

That does not match my experience, and I believe the reason is because of multiple managers. Let's suppose there are two profiles, one with 100 managers, and the other with 1 manager. Assume the 1 manager doesn't have collaborators; maybe his profile is private; and he didn't initiate the merge.

All 100 managers of the first profile will see the merge in their merge centre, and all 100 managers can approve the merge as much as they like but they won't be able to complete the merge. In these very common multiple manager cases, merges do not always complete when you merge them.

It's also possible for a merge to be initiated by someone who isn't a manager or collaborator on either side, in which case two approvals will also be likely to be required.

David, once one side of a merge is completed, it is removed from the merge center of everyone on that side. So in your 100 manager example, as soon as one of the 100 approves the merge, it should disappear for the other 99.

You're right, though, that it is possible for a merge to be initiated by someone who lacks permission on both sides. These will behave the way Chet described.

Mike

That is not what I am finding. I am finding even after I approve it, it stays in the merge centre.

I will send you an example that is right now still in my merge centre which tells me at the top:

Chet Leo Spencer, JOHN REEVES, David Prins and Lindsay Keegan (Strong) think these profiles are the same.

So as it happens both Chet and I have approved this one, but it is still in my merge centre.

At the bottom it tells me in big letters: "You've already approved this merge"

But it remains in my merge centre.

I will send you this privately rather than posting it here - to lessen hopefully the chances of someone completing the merge before you can investigate!

Mike - Mike Stangel

I have sent you three examples from my merge centre of merges that I and others have approved but which are still stuck there.

In one case, EIGHT of us have already approved the merge, yet it still isn't budging!

I replied to your message but since others may be interested, in all three cases these are master profiles that have been locked by a curator. I've spoken with the appropriate engineer about it, and we'll see what we can do to get those out of the way.

Yes - Mike and I continued the conversation privately.

The merge centre has also been revamped in last hours - looking good!

In what is now the "Managed by Me" section of the merge centre, I think the only circumstances of merge approval rather than completion should be:

- Merge initiation prior to last Oct

- Merges initiated by someone who lacks permission on both sides

- Merges of locked MPs: Mike and his team are working on this one - thank you!

In what is now the "My Relatives" section of the merge centre, merge requests can still get stuck there even after approval by yourself and others. I have asked Mike about this separately, and he or I can report back here if anything emerges on that front.
