I always recommend people to just delete their duplicates of claimed profiles.

OK, now I have 2 profiles of the same guy... both that say I do not have permission to VIEW, a red error notice.

John Parker

and

the same... but are listed separately, as 2 different profiles.

one managed by G Feldman
and updated by Junkman

Oh my! Bjorn... I have not the slightest idea of what you are telling me. I do not know how to construct such a thing.. You mean I go into my MSIE at the top and construct, put something, it there?

PS both profiles have the same number

Sally does not have any knowledge of diddly these days!

I am just trying to do merges that appear on my requests to merge pile.

What Sally describes is a generic problem since the recent privacy changes.

http://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000009685515008

John Parker profile has a pending merge but you can't see what the pending merge is.

The other profile must be private, which should not be for someone born in 1415. But how do you get to the other profile, to find its profile ID, to see if it is a good match, and/or to list it as a zombie?

I have suggested some things to Geni.com to solve this problem, but they are not yet implemented.

[There are also some generation issues there - John born 1415 has son born 1510 and uncle born 1475. His wife also born 1415 has a father born in 1435.]

David... Exactly, I was hoping to figure out how to fix that... But my knowledge of that line is zilche. I just took the parents out, and am hoping that someone will come in and get it right, then we can progress from there.

If you can post the two PROFILES not Tree Index that shows the blue plus sign in tree view, I think I can "un link" them. But I can't do it from tree index links - I get the error page.

Erica - In my cases, I don't know what the other profile is that is trying to be merged. In general, how can one know with certainty what the other profile is when you can't get to the other profile?

As I said in this case, and it applies more generally: "... how do you get to the other profile, to find its profile ID, to see if it is a good match, and/or to list it as a zombie?"

Exactly the problem, David!

Erica, not that it has any practical use for me, but I am curious how would you "un link" if you had the two profile ids - one of which was private and somewhat inaccessible?

Sally, done.

Sally, Erica and others who are interested in the discussion on the bottom half of the previous page. You will now see something different if you click on the pending merge at http://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000009685515008

Thoughts? An improvement? Bear in mind also these profiles are from 1400s so should not be private if they really are a match to the 1400s.

David, I think it is a big improvement. Now, when you view the side-by-side, you know what's going on. You are waiting for approval of the proposed merge. You also know, from the red border at the bottom of the screen, that the profile on the right is in a private tree. There is a HIGH chance that the merge will not be completed any time soon if one of the profiles is private.

David, the profile on the right is not private based on his age or family relationship. The profile is private because the manager has not yet joined the Big Tree.

The manager is Private User. He is not collaborating with anyone. He has only added 220 profiles. He was last on line in January. By the way, he's from Victoria, Australia. Pay him a visit, David, and get him to join the tree!

Maria, there are two pending merges there. The other is managed by a Linda Joy Carter. That one IS in the big tree.

Can curators make profiles from the 1400s public even if they are not in the big tree? Or is that unwise? Is it better to cancel the proposed merge?

I agree it is a big improvement.

David,& Maria,
I just checked out both of the pending merges. My conclusion is that BOTH are BAD, incorrect merges.

The two private profiles John Parker & John Parker are both contemporary. They live in the PRESENT time, not in the 15th century. They both have DOZENS of claimed profiles in their Family-Group. It is EXTREMELY unlikely that both trees have that many claimed historical profiles... THIS is the reason the profiles can NOT be made public.

We might need to ask Mike Stangel to cancel the merge requests, because otherwise we have no options to do so.

Sally,
I just sent that last one to Erica who curates the MP. It LOOKS like an obvious match, but I'll let her decide.

Shmuel

I have tried to cancel both bad merges.

I hit cancel and they don't go away! Mike Stangel - definitely need some help here at http://www.geni.com/merge/compare/6000000009685515008 to cancel these merges. Hit cancel and nothing happens!

For the record, the John Parker profile from 1415 was John Parker

The two profiles that Private User was trying to merge with that profile were:

John Parker

John Parker

Those are the two that Shmuel says are contemporary and a bad match.

"cancel" there, does not mean "reject/undo the requested merge" -- but I'm going to add that today based on feedback from the curators and other users including you. :-)

Okay, you can now reject the requested merge even if you cannot see a private profile.

Thank you, Mike!

Thank you Mike. I have now rejected those two merge requests on John Parker, based on Shmuel's advice that the two profiles being attempted to merge with the 1415 profile were contemporary, and therefore bad merges.

Can someone please resolve this conflicting info for me. I keep doing it and nothing happens. I need to take out the 1668, which is a mistype I did sometime in the past, and has been passed along ever since. also I would like to eliminate the II since it is also not accurate.

Here is the resolve conflict...

I have a second one also that just does not want to take... There should be no Ann....

Sally: I have resolved both of those with pleasure.

Thanks, David...
