I've been getting notifications about this project because I curate or co-manage some profiles in it.

I would encourage the use of firm parameters for inclusion, maybe like indisputable self-identification as an easy one. You have some figures included here -- Hannah Arendt jumps out as a big one -- who are notoriously difficult to pigeonhole into one box or another in terms of their beliefs. Due to the complexity of their beliefs and the fact that they're heroes to groups across the spectrum, I think you're going to have difficulty keeping some of them in this project, just as you'd have difficulty keeping them in a project for neoliberalism or libertarianism.

So maybe self-ID is a better approach?

Hanna Arendt was an interesting person.

Hannah Arendt was against Nazism, Fascism, Totalitarianism, and also against Communism (read Karl Marx).

This confusion happens in the English language (USA). Many other countries in the world take liberalism as the theory from Adam Smith and later von Mises.

Whatever will be out of that, it goes to the term "progressists" (in general meaning political leftists).

No, I understand that, and I'm very happy you're using the proper political science definition of classical liberal as opposed to the U.S. concept of "liberal."

My point was more that there are genuine debates about some of these folks, so painting them in any broad category is going to be extremely difficult and arguably inaccurate, with Arendt being the clearest example of someone we should probably avoid assigning any labels to other than the ones she chose for herself. In her case, for every scholar we could find calling her a conservative, we could find one saying she wasn't -- so that's why I'm saying really clear guidelines are important for a project like this, and going by specific terms people used to describe themselves might be the best option.

Thanks for finding that link from Bard College! It's not surprising that even they say she "is impossible to categorize."

I 100% agree -- and I think the communists and socialists project would be a good model to follow in terms of deciding who to add, since the rule of thumb users have come up with there is to add anyone who has ever formally or explicitly identified as a communist or socialist, typically through party membership.

I think I'm getting the sense that you might think I object to the existence of this project you've created, when in reality I'm glad someone has finally done it (and surprised it took so long!). I just want to make sure that, like other projects, inclusion is based on firm criteria and not subjective.

If you had a separate project for people who have influenced many conservatives and classical liberals, and you weren't actually assigning either of those terms to Arendt, I wouldn't have any concerns about including her there. Again, my concern in her case (and a couple of the others) is that 1) she never identified herself with either term, 2) her views were complex enough that you could arguably put her into several contradictory categories, and 3) major scholars continue to debate the validity of any of these terms as applied to her, with the exception of those she actually used for herself.

The Bard link notes that Arendt "is an original thinker, one who is impossible to categorize" and that when scholars do try to classify her one way or another, they do so not only against her will be in direct contradiction of her teachings. I think it's perfectly appropriate therefore to say that she is an inspirational luminary for many conservatives and classical liberals, but inappropriate to classify her as being a conservative or classical liberal by including her here.
