Phebe King vs Phebe Tuthill

“McLaurin wrongfully places her as dau of David, she belongs to William”

Private User - this might be the explanation for the mixup you saw. Maybe we can get it nailed down and described better, the “abouts” show the various genealogical constructs.

Long discussion/ argument for Phebe Horton (of Caleb) as wife of Constant King, with Phebe who married Henry Tuthill as an unplaced Horton of Long Island. She ancestral to Pres. Harrison so there may be answers in his (vetted) genealogy.

I’m going to upload to the Constant King profile as it carried a long register report of descendants, and that’s useful.

I believe I have found the evidence, not just logic argument, supporting that Phebe Tuthill was not the daughter of Caleb Horton & Phebe Horton and that their daughter was the wife of Constant King

In other words, we need to switch out Phebe King with Phebe Tuthill, but sadly, we don’t have parents for Phebe Tuthill. And, it’s in the Presidential genealogies, and Horton / Terry extends the Harrison line back quite a bit. So we need to make sure it’s clear.

Here’s at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/9718590/phebe-king with confused fields but good text.

The 1759 will and codicil of Caleb Horton names his children, but he only mentions his daughters by their first names, including Phebe. He also mentions one grandchild – Justin King.

Justus King, whose given name is sometimes recorded as Justin, was a son of Constant and Phebe Horton King. If Justus/Justin is Caleb Horton's grandson, then Phebe Horton King must be Caleb's daughter.

Also, Caleb Horton's will was signed in the presence of Richard Terry, Constant King, Joseph King, and Frederick King. Joseph and Frederick King were sons of Constant and Phebe Horton King. Richard Terry was Caleb Horton's son-in-law, the husband of Caleb's daughter Mary. It stands to reason that Constant King was also Caleb's son-in-law and that Joseph and Frederick King were Caleb's grandsons.

The codicil to Caleb Horton's will was signed in the presence of Richard Terry and Constant King. Neither the will nor the codicil contains the name Tuthill.

We also need to detach Richard Horton who married Elizabeth Horton as son of Caleb Horton. This is from the author of “In Search of Barnabas Horton”:

In Search of Barnabas Horton: From English Baker to Long Island Proprietor, 1600-1680. Jacqueline Dinan. Pynsleade Books, 2015. < GoogleBooks >

I won’t keep you in suspense. Team Caleb via Richard descended from a Pennsylvania Quaker of unknown origins! Team Jonathan’s sample matched those of Team Joseph. The sample from Team Caleb via Elijah matched those of Team Joseph, but did not match my husband’s sample, Team Caleb via Richard. And Team UK’s sample matched those of Teams Joseph, Jonathan, and Caleb via Elijah, but not the sample from Team Caleb via Richard. My husband’s team had struck out. Science proved he and others on the same team had no genetic connection to Barnabas Horton of Southold. Instead, Team Caleb via Richard descended from a Pennsylvania Quaker of unknown origins!

This is complete.

To recap:

Phebe Horton, parents unknown, married Henry Tuthill. They were the grandparents of the 9th First Lady of the United States and raised her on Long Island.

Phebe Horton, daughter of Caleb Horton & Phebe Terry, married the hatter Constant King. This entire group migrated from Long Island to Morris County, New Jersey.

Beware! The traditional genealogies, as recent as 1989, do not have this interpreted correctly.

That is a lot of work and I really appreciate you helping to clear that up and making the necessary corrections.

I seem to be a descendant of Mary King and John Scudder of Newtown Long Island, and it looks like the King and Tuthill/Tuttle families go way back together.

Looking at my kinship line to Phebe Tuthill (the one whose parents are unknown, Phebe Horton Tuthill), I see that her husband Henry Tuthill III is the g-grandson of the sister of Mary King, Deliverance King and her husband, John Tuthill John Tuthill .

Then clicking on the latter I find that he has multiple conflicting fathers. That appears to be an easy fix, just thought I should bring it to your attention while we're working on the lineages.

Constant King (m. Phebe, daughter of Caleb Horton and Phebe Terry) is the g-grandson of William King of Salem through Samuel (Mary and Deliverance's brother).

Through Samuel King's son, Capt. John King of Long Island Capt. John King of Long Island Constant King (husband of Caleb Horton's daughter, Phebe) and Henry Tuthill III (husband of the Phebe Horton who was easily confused with Constant's wife) -- are first cousins, once removed, with only a few years difference in age.

With regard to the Hortons, Geni shows us that Phebe (Horton) King's parents, Caleb Horton and Phebe Terry -- were first cousins.

The most relevant Geni Horton / Tuthill connections for the location and timeframe are to be seen within the family group for Jonathan Horton of Suffolk County, NY.

This Jonathan Horton married Elizabeth Goldsmith, granddaughter of John Tuthill and Deliverance King (mentioned above in this post). Her sister, Mary Goldsmith married another Caleb Horton. The two Horton husbands of the Goldsmith sister were first cousins once removed in a Horton line involving two Calebs and three Jonathans.

This Jonathan also had an aunt Phoebe Horton (b. 1678) and two uncles, Nathan Horton and David Horton.

David Horton and Jonathan (i.e. "Nathan") Horton are listed along with Henry Tuthill, "Jr." among the Freeholders of Suffolk County, NY in February 27, 1737.

https://archive.org/details/listsofinhabitan0000unse/page/248/mode/...

In the genealogy of the Hortons of Southold, NY (Suffolk County), Phebe daughter of Caleb Horton and Phebe Terry is given as wife of Henry Tuthill (p. 68);

and Phebe daughter of DAVID Horton and Mary HORTON (first cousins, p. 66), married Constant King.

https://archive.org/details/hortongenealogyo00hort/page/66/mode/2up...

So it appears that long since this Horton family genealogy was compiled by an early descendant (George F. Horton, 1806 - 1886), someone came up with an alternate theory with regard to the wife of Constant King, Revolutionary War veteran.

DAR doesn't openly recognize the wife and children of Constant King. However, his family is shown in the source I cited from New England Historical and Genealogical Register.

https://services.dar.org/public/dar_research/search_adb/default.cfm

A great deal of the family connections between the descendants of Barnabas Horton (including Caleb), the Conklins, Terrys, Tuthills, Osborn, Goldsmiths, and Kings -- as revealed in Southold town and land records.

I found pp. 336-345 particularly interesting, although there is a whole lot more than that in this text.

I forgot to mention also the Case family connection to the same community.

The Tuthill ancestry of President Benjamin Harrison (p. 407).

West of Halsey's Manor was a very large extent of woodland, bounded south by Dongon's line, east by the land sold to Captain Isaac Halsey and west by the line of the Brookhaven Patent. This was sold by William Smith (son of Colonel William Smith) to Benjamin Youngs, of Southold, February 4, 1721, for £80. This tract was afterward called "Brookfield."

Benjamin Youngs sold the whole to James Reeves, Joshua Tuthill, Mathias Dickinson, Richard Terry, Charles Booth, Thomas Goldsmith, CALEB Horton, DAVID Horton, Daniel Tuthill, Joshua Wells, Samuel Conkling, Thomas Reeves, Nathaniel Warner, Josiah Youngs, Daniel Parschal, Joseph Wickham, Joshua Wells, Jr., Joseph Hulse and Jonathan Dimar, Feb. 4, 1721.

Benjamin Youngs reserved a share for himself. This tract remained undivided for many years. It was surveyed and divided among its owners October 2, 1793, and the survey and partition is in the Records of Brookhaven. The whole tract contains 6,600 acres....

Well I've come no closer to proving anything, but enjoyed trying.

I enjoyed this read, which describes the migrations from Southold, Long Island to Morris County, New Jersey. Including the first Protestant ministry to West Florida (now Mississippi).

DAR for Constant King is here. The error is with Justus King’s wife.
