Would love to read the PDF on Rollo. Can you send it to my email? k.m.marshall@live.com I am interested in any info pertaining to my 32nd GGF. Thanks Kat
I'm almost 1/2 way thru.
The main take away IMHO is that the century plus feud between Norwegian and Danish scholars over Rollo's nationality was all a waste of time as the author presents sound arguments that Rollo was Flemish. So if anyone was to have a claim it's the Belgians of all people!! ;)
A very interesting read and given my lack of preference either way a very amusing result viz nationality.
I'll post again once I get to the end. I will admit I am not reading the massive chunks of Dudo that are quoted, just the author's own writing.
Alex Moes It is funny when they argue about nationality when that then did not mean what it means today. People could share language, customs and traditions, and that over a very vast territory, if you were there when Rollo lived. Norway meant exactly what it says, the north way, Denmark means the sunken land, the meaning of dane is marsh, surrounded by it, it becomes Denmark and the people danes.
"In the ninth century, numerous 'danes' sailed on the North Sea. The word dane (dene) stands for heathen valley dwellers in the low countries near the sea, approximately from the Seine in the south to Zeeland in the north. So danish Flanders actually means pagan Flanders. Walcheren (Walacria) at the mouth of the Scheldt was strategically, economically and militarily important." Quote from the Pdf.
Hello cousins. Rollo was my 31st GGF and I do have Norwegian, Danish and Belgian DNA, so that's interesting. I also have Faroese DNA, whatever that means. I tried to participate with their DNA research project, but no one responded back to me and I just figured it must be only for residents of the islands and sending my DNA overseas could be something they don't want to bother with and possibly not even needed. I am also Iberian, which Idk that there are many of us who are (mine is miniscule, which I would think indicates more ancient relationship DNA matches) and also Manx from Isle of Man. I have not come across anyone who is all 3 so far, but it's not like they don't exist.
Hi,
Rollo is my 35th GGgrandfather. My mother took the DNA test before she passed and had Iberian in her DNA as well. She was also Finnish, Greek and south Italian and English. I looked into to it a little and Iberian blood line seems to be pre Scottish Viking type blood. My DNA test said Scandinavian, Greek and south Italian and English. I am going to take another test with a different dna company and see what comes up.
Idk, her English looks pretty good to me. She's saying is your 27th great grandfather. Mine was William I, so 27th for Rollo isn't possible. I am connected through both my parents and I only know this because on Ancestry, when looking specifically for Guernsey, Channel Islands, since I have DNA from there, both paternal and maternal matches show up. This was William's favorite place in the Channel Islands and where he was staying prior to invading England, from what I understand. My confusion with my tree and ancestry is great. If I search Stein in my Ancestry matches, I run into too many names with stein in them, to be honest. I came across one that says paternal match but the people listed on the map portion of their profile are my mom's mom's side. I mean, that's my maternal 3rd GGM. That's a close relation to be a paternal match. One Stein woman in her 50s is a paternal match and I'm saying she looks like my mom's side. My maternal and paternal sides are correct. Anyway. I have to stop thinking about it right now. It's a lot. I don't think I'm positive that my father's line has always been Stein. I can only get to my 3rd GGF for "sure". That's pretty sad. The wall is high as can be there.
I was confused about the post saying “your” as well and decided to chalk it up to “auto correct” it came right after my comment and I was like … can’t be me bc that is impossible I counted on the tree !! :)
Also I am related soooo many ways through the Rollo line … the tree looks like a strange root system …
If anyone wants help researching Rollo or his lines I can show you what I have :) reach out my e mail is

Ingrida has just copypasted the result she got when she asked Geni for what was her realtionship to Rollo. The "your" in the statement means in this case Ingrida and not anyone else. Just check what Geni tells you next time you check what is your relationship back to someone, and you will see a similar text.
