Rabbi Abraham Samuel Bacharach - His cemetary

The Alsbach-Bickenbach Jewish cemetery - laid out at the beginning of the 16th century (or possibly even earlier) (the first written references to the cemetery can be found in old Alsbach account books from the years 1423 and 1563) and subsequently expanded several times (to a Total area of approx. 22,600 m²) - is the largest Jewish burial ground in the former Grand Duchy of Hesse with more than 2,100 gravestones. Jews from about 30 southern Hessian towns within a radius of about 25 to 30 kilometers who had died since the early 18th century found their final resting place here. Since it was an "Orthodox" cemetery, most of the tombs in the older area show little or no decorative elements. One of the oldest tombs is that of Rabbi Samuel Ben Isaak Bacharach, who was Chief Rabbi of Worms and Imperial Rabbi of Germany, in 1615 He had to flee from Worms as part of the expulsion of the Jews and died soon after in Gernsheim.
