I note that Carl Webb probably has cousins living in Australia and that these cousins from Carl's sisters would carry mtDNA identical to Carl (= Sms hair sample). It is a relatively easy matter to use Newspaper records (of marriages, births,deaths etc) to trace the living descendants who will carry matching autosomal DNA (all the cousins and their descendants) or mtDNA (all cousins and their descendants on the maternal side (= Carl's sisters).
I suggest to SAPOL they employ a genealogist to trace the descendants of the following couples to confirm if Carl Webb is indeed SM.
Doris Maud Webb 1901-1956 m. Daniel W. Martin 1894-1956
daughter Norma Mary Martin 1925-2019 m. Eric Rowles Hornsby 1908- Married 20th December 1947 at Melbourne.
Gladys May Webb 1897-1949 married Leslie W. Scott 1895-1971. Married 1918 in Victoria.
Freda Grace Webb 1896-1964 married Thomas Gerald. Keane. Married 1915 in Victoria. Two sons and a daughter. Leo Vivian Keane 1915-2005. John Russel Kean. 1917-1941. Gwendoline Mary Keane 1919-1994.
Leo Vivian m Irene Emily Gray and they have a son Gerald Thomas Keane who is said to be still living.
Gwendoline 1919-1994 married 7th December 1941 to William John Arthur Dickinson at Brunswick, Victoria. Daughter Patricia Ann Dickinson born 30th November 1949 Spotswood, Victoria. Died 2nd December 1987 at Melton, Victoria. Son Michael William Dri 1970-2000.
Bottom line: There is at least one living relative of Carl Webb who could provide a DNA sample that would confirm the identification of SM as being Carl Webb.
Gerald Thomas. Keane. Unfortunately for the Prof. And his team Gerald can't carry Sms mtDNA but he will carry some of Carl's autosomal DNA. I have previously noted that Prof's team have extracted some autosomal DNA from SM's hair and as I previously noted this would probably be sufficient DNA to all for match checking So, Mr Gerald Thomas Keane, step up please for your free DNA test.
