Interesting facts about the 1st Duke of Lancaster who was actually Henry Grosmont, father of Blanche of Lancaster. His older children died young, so she bought the title with her to her marriage with John of Gaunt, who is also listed as the first Duke of Lancaster1 One can only assume that it was then created as a Royal Duke, so he became the first Royal Duke of Lancaster. Their son Henry Bolingbroke, thus named as he was born in his mothers favorite Caste in Lincolnshire, usurped the Throne from Richard 11, and became Henry V1. He decreed that from then on only the reigning Monarch should carry the title The Duke of Lancaster, so the current incumbant is Queen Elizabeth 11 of England. Yes, I do mean Duke google it.
