Anschitil de Turville - True ancestry of Roger de Puttenham

Agree. I don’t see anything to support Roger de Puttenham in this family.

Anschitil was a vassal of William the Conquerer's in 1066 AD.

Fought alongside William the Conquerer in 1066.

Had two children with his wife, Eve De Boessey; Robert, who kept the de Harcourt name, and Roger, who took on de Puttenham.

Having trouble reconciling his birth/death with that of his parents. It's possible that there's a generation missing, or he was born (and died) earlier than the dates put here. There's conflicting information on Anschitil; it's also possible that there were several different Anschitils, but all of them seem to have parents with the same name, which makes no sense. Will correct it if and when the correct information presents itself.

I don’t think (the 1st) Anchetil was with William the Conquerer. I think he was long dead in 1066.

1. ANSCHETIL d’Harcourt . Guillaume de Jumièges records that “Turulfo de Ponte-Audomari...filius...Torf” was the brother of “Turchetillus pater Anschetilli de Harecurt”[918].

The charter dated 13 Jan 1103, under which “Philippus de Braosa” confirmed agreement with the abbey of Fécamp witnessed by “ex parte Philippi, Robertus frater eius, Anchetilli filius...”[919], suggests that Anschetil’s widow may have married, as her second husband, Guillaume [I] de Briouse (-[11 Dec 1093/1095]). Père Anselme says that Robert built the castle of Harcourt (undated)[924]. “Philippus de Braosa” confirmed agreement with the abbey of Fécamp by charter dated 13 Jan 1103 which names "Willielmus Philippi pater", and is witnessed by “ex parte Philippi, Robertus frater eius, Anchetilli filius...”[925]. m AGNES, daughter of --- (-after 1148). Her name is confirmed by the charter dated 1148 under which [her son] “Willielmus de Harvecurt” donated “totam terram Stantunie” to Garendon abbey (Leicestershire), with the consent of “Yvonis fratris mei et Agnetis matris mee”[926]. This site seems to describe the Anschitil > Roger tree we see on Geni. It’s a different family from the d’Harcourts.

One of the greatest lords that accompanied William the Conqueror upon his memorable invasion of England in 1066 was his half brother Odo, Bishop of Bayeux. Among the Bishop's followers was Anschitil, who may have been actually present at the Battle of Hastings.
