Previously, the wife of Alexander, Earl of Menteith (son of Walter) was shown in Geni as Matilda de Arnot, who was thought to have married Sir Simon de Haldane second.

But there’s been a significant article from John P. Ravilious, placing her a Matilda, sister of Malise, Earl of Strathhearn.

Wikipedia currently shows:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander,_Earl_of_Menteith

He married a lady named Matilda (Maud),[7] a daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn,[8] and together they had the following children:

# Alan, Earl of Menteith, who succeeded his father as Earl.[9]
# Peter, who in 1296 was a hostage in England with his brother Alan. He accompanied King Edward to Flanders, and took part in the French campaign of 1297, where he may have been killed.[10]
# Murdach, who became Earl of Menteith.[10]
# Alexander, styled as brother of Murdach in a charter to Gilbert Drummond.[10]
# Malise, who had a charter from Robert I of the lands of Ballygillachy.[8]
# Margaret de Menteith, wife of Alexander de Abernethy.[11]
# Ellen, recently identified as the wife of William Ferrers, 1st Baron Ferrers of Groby (d. 20 March 1324/5).[8]

I’ve created a new profile for Matilda of Strathearn placed as daughter of Robert, 4th Earl of Strathearn wife of Alexander, Earl of Menteith and mother of 7 children.

Anyone who wishes to co manage the profile is most welcome to do so. Request management from actions > request management.

Please note that the source we use for primary evidence in the medieval tree does not currently show a daughter called Matilda of Robert of Strathearn.

And Medlands shows the wife of Alexander, Earl of Menteith, as “Matilda” with no parents listed:

However, my own feeling is:

- there Is not and will probably never be a primary source for Matilda’s parentage
- these working current genealogists (study seems ongoing) make a strong and careful case for this genealogy

Read the article(s) for yourself and help decide. It’s uploaded and attached to profiles.
