Col. John Taylor Sr. is described sometimes as having had two wives. But the research shows that the second wife didn't exist. Widow Elizabeth Taylor went to court in 1663 for her orphans. She was not Elizabeth Horton, as is sometimes portrayed. This is due to a likely mixup with Elizabeth (Flowers) Taylor HORTON Hughes, and confusion with another John Taylor of Lancaster, a younger man dying around the same time as this John Taylor, unfortunately.

Can anyone help clarify these differing genealogies?
“In fact the origins of John Taylor of Lancaster Co. are unknown; and furthermore there is no evidence to connect any colonial immigrant Taylors to the English family of the martyred priest.24 John Taylor’s estate is the earliest probated estate of an individual by the name of Taylor which survives from the Northern Neck.25 Lancaster probate and court records do indicate John of Lancaster Co. and his wife Elizabeth had at least a daughter named Elizabeth (who married one Simon Sallard) and a son Richard Taylor, mentioned in the will of his step-father Tobias Horton in October 1668. However, this Richard was dead by 22 May 1669, when his sister Elizabeth Sallard took administration of his estate and inherited his land.26”
http://www.nltaylor.net/pdfs/Taylorgen.pdf Page 16
Nat Taylor is a highly respected genealogist. Is he referring to this Elizabeth and John Taylor ? If so, it looks like she married 2nd to Tobias Horton.
Probate and court records confirm John Taylor of Lancaster County, Virginia and his wife Elizabeth had at least [5] [6]
- a son Richard Taylor, who died as a teenager, and
- a daughter Elizabeth Taylor, who married Simon SALLARD.
By October 1654 his widow Elizabeth had remarried to Tobias Horton and they undertook a settlement inventory of John Taylor’s estate. The lot was valued at 9,590 pounds of tobacco (the common medium of exchange) and included “three old Bibles and seventy other books”, evidence of John’s education in England. Five years later in 1659 Horton paid off the last of John Taylor’s debt of 6,173 pounds of tobacco.
"In the same year [1654], Elizabeth Horton, wife of Tobias Horton, and relict of John Taylor, deceased, asks for her dower in her deceased husband's estate". [6]
His widow Elizabeth died on 28 Feb 1659 in Lancaster County, Virginia.
His son Richard Taylor was mentioned in the October 1668 Will of his step-father, Tobias Horton.
The last Will of Tobias Horton, in Lancaster County, Virginia mentioned:
- wife, Elizabeth
- son, Tobias
- daughter, Rebecca
- son-in-law, Richard Taylor
- witness: Fortunatus Snydor.
This Richard Taylor died intestate before 22 May 1669, when his sister Elizabeth (Taylor) SALLARD was found to be his sole heir and took administration of his estate and inherited his land.
Research Notes
The lineage of John Taylor was investigated by a professional genealogist, Nathaniel Lane Taylor, PhD, who found that a link to Rev. Rowland Taylor and two sons named Richard to be baseless. Two of his articles published in "The American Genealogist" magazine include:
"The False and Possibly True English Origins of Richard Taylor [7]
"An American Taylor Family: Descendants of Richard Taylor (d. 1679) [5]

I think the wikitree (and Geni) are confusing different John Taylor’s and different Elizabeth Taylors.

Looks like I was wrong to separate John “the immigrant” Taylor some time back. There’s been a new professional publication in 2012 which adds more insight to him and his family.
summary: John Taylor, parents unknown, d 1652 m 1) Rebecca Ravening, no children. Married 2) Elizabeth (unknown) Winterbourne Taylor Horton Hughes. 2 children, Richard died unmarried; Elizabeth (Taylor) Sallard Baker.

This article presents several pieces of evidence, involving land deeds, migration patterns in Virginia, and proximity of certain other individuals, to show that the John Taylor who arrived in the Swan in 1610 (as per the 1624/5 muster) is the same John Taylor whose will was probated in 1652/3.

12. 86:32-33. Evidence is presented that John Taylor never lived in Lancaster County, although he had recently acquired land there, and his widow initiated probate there after being brought to Lancaster County by Tobias Horton, her next husband.
Contrary to information published elsewhere, he was not the son of John and Elizabeth Taylor of Isle of Wight and Lancaster Counties, as a probate record indicates that the only child of John and Elizabeth Taylor who lived beyond 1669 was their daughter Elizabeth.[3]

Dear Erica, Here is my Genealogy on the Taylor Family,,I hope it helps.
The name Taylor in Ireland was introduced into the Country by Settlers from England and Scotland as early as the fourteenth Century. The majority of
descendents bearing this name can still be found in the initial Settlement area of the.Province of Ulster.
The TAYLOR family is distinguished as a Clan in it's own right with a extensive history. In ye old days a family could not qualify for Clan Status unless they had the proven ability to put 250 armed
men ahorse within one hour to defend their clan, lands and properites.
As well as providing a fighting men for their leige lord and king.
The Taylor family held Castles, Estates and Manors that you can still can be found in England. Branches formed throughout Europe, North America, and Australia.
The English suname Taylor is classified as being occupational in origin. It can be said that the most ancient and interesting of surnames are those derived from the occupation of the original bearer.
Occupational names have provided what has been described by Scholars
as "an inventory of the common trades of medieval Europe". Such names offer a glimpse into the daily lives of our ancestors. With regard to the surname Taylor, it is ultimately derived from the Anglo Norman French word "taillour", from the Old French" tailleor, tailleur",
denoting a cutter of cloth, a tailor". Variants of this surname include Tayler, Tailer and tailyour. Records of this surname in England date back to the eleventh century when one Walter Taylur
appears in the Archaeologia Cantiana of 1180. In 1182 one William Le Taillur is listed in the Pipe Rolls of Somerset and John Le Talliur is mentioned in the Assize Rolls of Lincolnshire in 1202.
In 1273 the Hundred Rolls contain references to Henry Le Taluir of
Co. Norfolk, Cecil Le Tayllour of Cambridgeshire, Roger Le Taylur
of Lincolnshire and Richard Le Taylor of Northhamptonshire. Notable
bearers of this surname include Brook Taylor {1685-1731}, the English
mathematician and Ann Taylor {1782-1866} and her sister Jane {1783-
1823}, English writers of children verses. This suname was intro-
duced to the United States at an early date. The "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index" record that one Mrs. Taylor arrived in Virginia in 1623 and arrival of one Abraham Taylor is recorded in the same state in 1654.

The opinion that the two supposed wives were in fact just one seems to clarify what i have collected on the Taylors from a least 200 different Internet sources and reconciled as best I could without access to primary evidence.
Any other corrections or additions to my Taylor/Gescoigne web page is quite welcome:
www.multiwords.de/genealogy/gascoigne02.htm#JohnTaylor1607
It’s this area that needs clarification (parents, spouse, her parents, their children)

The Horton ancestry seen for Elizabeth, wife of Col. John Taylor, seems not possible, as Elizabeth, daughter of William Horton, of Gumley & Isabella Horton died as a child.
Same for the narrative here, I think it could use updating on the wife and immigration.
John "The Immigrant" Taylor b 10 Aug 1607 in ?Pennington Castle, Cumberland Co, Engl Christening (this data may have been contemporarily falsified to conceal descent from the martyr, Rowland Taylor, and his Tinsdale wife: possession of a Tinsdale Bible could bring a death sentence until this time; even though the King James Bible was based on the Tinsdale Bible for 80 % of its text, the ban was still in effect.) 1648 to Va d Jan 1651/2 Lancaster, Va. On 4 Dec 1619 a John Taylor arrived in Jamestown on the "MARGARET" departed from Bristoll, England.
m ?1637 in Worthenby, Flintshire, Wales 1 Elizabeth Nin b ca 1610 in Hadleigh, Suffolkshire, England ca BEF 1654 she m2 Tobias, Horton (The dates for marriage and births seem somewhat incompatible although there were many marriages under the age of 13 in the 15th and 16th centuries, even 8 was common enough. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/TAYLOR/2002-04/101855... shows m as 1620 and wife as Elizabeth Horton)

Dr. jur. William Griffith Hester I think the Carrill article (at least as quoted from at WeRelate) offers an excellent clarification on Elizabeth - mother of Elizabeth (Taylor) Sallard.
https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Elizabeth_Unknown_(4556)_
Carrell, William P. II. A New First Family of Virginia: John Taylor of Elizabeth City, Isle of Wight County, and Lancaster County, Virginia. American Genealogist (D.L. Jacobus). (2012-13) 86:37. “On 14 May 1662 (the date is given in footnote 40 on page 33), Elizabeth, "the now Wife of Toby Horton" confessed that 'Horton held cows "belonging to the Orphts. of John Taylor and Willm. Winterborne both long since deced ..."'

And this shows the woman with the Flowers and Horton names is “not” the mother of the John Taylor who married Alice Gaskins.
This profile is also illuminating and I’m wondering if his parents are proven rather than apocryphal.

'.. it was clearly this John Taylor [the one who patented land between branches of the Wiccomico and Corrotoman Rivers in Lancaster County in 1664] who ... patented land in Northampton County, on Virginia's Eastern Shore, in 1648.'
In my opinion, you’ll want to update your records on these two:
13. Elizabeth TAYLOR, Born: 1645, Hadleigh, Suffolkshire, England,
Christened: 1648, Va., Died: 1679, Married, Simon, Sallard.
14. Richard II TAYLOR, Born: 1650, Northumberland, County, Virginia,
Died: May 1669, Lancaster, Virginia, Colonies
They are indeed brother and sister, Elizabeth was Richard’s heir. But they were born in the Virginia Colony (either Elizabeth City or Isle of Wight) to the other Elizabeth & John Taylor. Tobias Horton named Richard Taylor as his son in law in his 1668 will.

Arlis Deanna Taylor Be careful with your edits, please. There are 20 managers and thousands of descendants of Elizabeth Taylor on Geni, and currently you’ve “wiped out” her vital statistics.
Just to confuse matters more:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/4:1:L6FH-N6L Claims:
There are three different families:
*1st. John Taylor and Mrs John Taylor from Flintshire, Wales.
* 2nd. Elizabeth Horton born 1610, (l6fh-n6l) and Col John William Talor born 1670 (ly9w-wn5) from Carlise, Cumberland, and Leicestershire, England and
* 3rd. Tobias Horton (9q56-ts6) from Virgnia and Elizabeth Nunne 1610-1659 (l22z-6xr) from Suffolk England.

I don’t quite agree. We have a clear record that Elizabeth, John Taylor’s widow, married Tobias Horton:
https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000167058645826
An old study with parents born in Leicestershire but she’s born in Wales, her children born Suffolk in England, and she died 1659 in Lancaster VA. The last fact should be verifiable.
https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000012363667204
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/219354565/elizabeth-taylor Has her birth as CHRISTENING: October 28, 1610, Great Whelnetham, Suffolk, England.
That matches Elizabeth Wilson?
So, was her maiden name Nunn?
Is there a record for her burial at
Wicomico Parish Church Cemetery
Wicomico Church, Northumberland County, Virginia, USA?
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Wicomico_Parish,_Virginia
Wicomico's Parish Registers have not survived.
I will look it up, There are more reliable sources than find-a-grave since I spend my day fixing errors on find-a-grave. I do believe you are correct Erica Howton or on the right path. The Taylor's, are very much like the "Harrison's" that you handed me to pick apart and to determine that mess which as you know is still being changed. As a Harrison descendant, I was able to find a website that about 30 Harrison descendants are assigned to a particular branch from the different areas, Scotland, England, Virginia, Maryland, NC, etc.... Yes, like myself, if I did not document my whereabouts, in 100 years from now, if people only went by location as to where my family is/was, and put me near them, I would be put with the wrong people. Granted I am current day, transportation was not as easy then.
Off to Tame the Taylor's.
See if I can find any additional information. It takes a village sometimes to truly find the answers and to depict and piece the past together.
Thanks Erica.
