David is descended from Rebecca through Judah, rather than my ancestor, Joseph. That makes sense I guess; but the part about being connected to David through Ishmael instead of Isaac doesn't make sense to me. I suppose it must be the shortest path, after all. Sorry, I misunderstood.

I think you have the same problem as I have:
through my dad's profile, the algorithm almost always shows the correct connection, but through my profile, the algorithm shows a different way, and then great -grandfathers becomes uncle / cousin...
I think the reason is this: when you are a descendant of a certain person through several branches the algorithm shows different ways between you and your parents and that great grandfathers.
Luckily, I know almost all of my great-grandparents up to Rashi, I have dealt with every branch and branch, but I would be very happy if geni would fix this bug

Thank you very much, Haim Katz - Hachoen Wartski for helping me to better understand the problem. It has been going on for at least a year that I'm aware of, and it is most annoying when looking at very ancient ancestors. Occasionally I have been able to 'work around it' by taking alternate paths one step at a time, but it is awfully time consuming and frankly I usually get lost and can't remember how I got there.

My problemis since day one in geni
It's annoying, but as I wrote I dealt with every branch until Rashi, so I know almost all the names of my great-grandparents, when I'm not sure, I check through my dad's profile
And one more thing: every few days the algorithm restarts, and then with some of my great-grandparents the issue settles down, but in that second, the problem passes to my other great-great-grandparents

That is interesting. I must remember to check through my mother or father or maybe even one of my grandparents and see what happens.

I will give one small example:
Many times for some reason I do not understand, the algorithm shows me the connection through my great-grandmother's first husband. True, he and I are cousins (6), but I am a direct descendant of my great-grandparents,I do not need his profile to show me the connection.
With my dad, everything is fine, and the algorithm shows the right connection

Come to think of it, I've had similar experiences (except never remembered to try retesting them with my parent's profile instead). The algorithm is useful but eccentric. As when tagging documents, relationships reported for the automatically generated prompts are not always what I expect. They sometimes appear vaguely 'off', making me pause momentarily - until I remember: right, that person is also my cousin or something.

Then there was the time I needed to disconnect my g-uncle's adoptive parents (leaving the biological ones in place) because nearly all of my data was going through the adoptive parents! I rarely found any blood kinships at all for myself until it was changed.

Of course it is all useful information. But family historians generally seek to learn about our natural ancestry first and foremost. The rest is gravy. So I don't doubt the programmers are aware of the problem and would fix it if doing so was feasible. Sometimes it is wise just to leave things alone.

i am very active in geni, love to deal with my family tree, I understand that not only me suffer from the problem with the algorithm, I very much hope that this annoying problem will be solved

Haim Katz - Hachoen Wartski you were absolutely right!! Unless there's been some mistake, King David is my father's 104th g-grandfather. I should have known better, and apologize for being so slow to catch on. You are so very patient and kind, thank you.

Mother's lineage is patchy, but then neither her paternal nor maternal lineage can be traced back very far without taking some detours. It connects through my parents' very distant blood kinship (17th x1 cousins).

I'm glad to know everything worked out for you.
As I wrote, the problem with the algorithm has been since the first day in geni, so as soon as you wrote about the problem , I thought the problem is the same as the problem That I suffer.

The point where for me personally the algorithm perturbs is very low on the tree, with my paternal 4th g-grandfather. It suddenly decides for whatever reason to go through his wife instead. I can't imagine why that happens, though. (It doesn't even attempt to utilize my mother's ancestry, which seems very reasonable.)

Yehoshua Aharon Levy please accept my sincere apology, I never intended to be involved at all with this discussion, much less disrupt and divert it. The 'King David issue' must have triggered something subconsciously in me and I am very sorry, yet also grateful for receiving the help that served to clear up some of the confusion for me. Carry on.

I am not sure exactly how many all blue path's I have to King David of Israel. He is my 103rd great grandfather thru my mother....and he is my 104th great grandfather thru my father.

No apologies needed, I’m just happy things became clear to you!
