Donald MacEth - Incorrect father?

Current research suggests that Donald was actually the son of Malcolm MacAlexander - the brother in law of Somerled - and the prisoner of Roxburgh with his father.

Presently, Cawley has him as a son of MacEth:

BUT Cawley has yet to update what he alludes to here: "There would be no such restriction on the date if Malcolm son of King Alexander I and Malcolm MacHeth were two different persons as suggested by Duncan[10].

Presently Cawley has the following:
DONALD (before 1134-after 1156). The Chronicle of Melrose records that "Dovenald the son of Malcol was captured at Witern, and imprisoned in the tower at Rokesburc along with his father"[11]. John of Fordun’s Scotichronicon (Continuator) records that "Summerledus regulus Ergadiæ et sui nepotes, filii…Malcolmi Macheth" rebelled against King Malcolm IV in the first year of his reign and that "nepos eius unus filiorum Malcolmi Macheth, Dovenaldus" was captured "apud Quhythern" and imprisoned "in eadem turre de Marchemond cum patre suo"[12].

BUT Alasdair Ross's excellent research work in 'The Identity of the Prisoner of Roxburgh: Malcolm son of Alexander or Malcolm MacEth?' in S. Arbuthnot, K. Hollo, and A.Ross (editors), Festschrift: Essays in honour of Professor Colm Ó Baoill, (forthcoming, 2004)
demonstrates that this is based on the 'Gesta Annalia I, (c.1250) THE VERACITY OF WHICH IS DISCREDITED BY ROSS AS A MANGLING OF PREVIOUS TEXTS

Presently Cawley also says "There is no mention of his having succeeded his father as Earl of Ross, suggesting that Donald predeceased him"
BUT THE REASON FOR THIS COULD AS EASILY BE THAT HE DIDN'T HAVE A SON CALLED DONALD.

I would say, yes, make the changes, with curator's notes and Overview explanation and links to the discusssions.

That apparently leaves Malcolm MacEth out in the cold, heir-wise, which may explain why the Earldom of Ross went into abeyance for so long - no male to inherit it.
