Are there any good records available to research Senator Harris's ancestry? Any Indian or Jamaican Geni Users who could help? Right now she only has 23 ancestors listed on Geni.

Private User,

We are trying to expand out her Jamaican and Indian trees as far back as we can go.

It appears that her husband is the connection through my father's side.

Kevin,
Do you mean that there are already researchers working on it?

Private User,

I don't know for certain if anyone is working on it.

Tamás Flinn Caldwell-Gilbert,

Can you help out with this?

Kevin Lawrence Hanit I don't think so unfortunately. Jamaican, and especially Indian, genealogy is a bit outside of my area of familiarity. I simply do not know where to begin looking for genealogical resources.

Most of the records for Jamaica are located on www.familysearch.org. There is also a family tree with Kamala Harris's ancestors on that site along with all the documents that support it. Don't know who manages it but the contact information is there as well.

Private User We had entered the tree based on an article from her father so I think it’s likely accurate as far as it goes. If you or your relatives etc have any insight, or ability to expand it further, that would be greatly appreciated. I know I’m hesitant just to use records because I don’t have the cultural context the article supplied, as example. And similar names, always a danger.

awesome - you got grandfathers death certificate -

Lol Erica...without reading the article I think I understand what you mean by "cultural context". In the Caribbean everyone is given a nickname used by family members and those who are close. Birth names aka "government names" are only used in official circumstances. In fact, many people die with their nickname on their gravestone since family members do not know their birth names.

Regarding Kamala's tree, when I have some time I can take a look again.

I’ll finish off getting more siblings entered. The FS tree looks fine.

Anchit Gupta,

Can you help expand out her mother's tree?

If you can't, can you find Geni users who can?

Hi Erica Howton. One of Kamala's relatives contacted me. I am going to send you a PM.

Solomon Samuel Harris Should be in the ancestry of Kamala Harris but isn’t currently showing as such. Can we find the connection?

11/23/2020 at 8:12 PM

Why do you think Solomon Samuel Harris is an ancestor of Kamala?

11/23/2020 at 9:18 PM

Ahhh... If FamilySearch records hold up, he, Solomon Samuel, would be a great uncle (brother of Joseph Alexander Harris).

AND ... she apparently has a connection to Scotland from Jamaica, via Elizabeth Ann Harris ... nothing to tell yet where it goes from there, but that birth place seems reasonably documented.

11/23/2020 at 9:45 PM

Nope, the Scotland connection via Elizabeth is not verified by documents. Furthermore, Elizabeth Brown was 2nd wife, not direct ancestor of Kamala.

11/23/2020 at 11:19 PM

I put the mother back to Mariane (Mary Ann?) instead of Elizabeth, because that was how it was originally on Geni. Sure, Elizabeth could have been the mother of all those children, but until documents support one or the other, I deferred to the "first added" mother.

Samuel Solomon's birth was 1864; FS entry hadn't been updated to match document.

11/23/2020 at 11:36 PM

Keep verifying documents! (It's simple to 'swap' the mother for all the children at once, if warranted.)

Josephine is not currently shown as child of James Henry Harris on FamilySearch ... need to add source to show it's the same Jamaican James Henry Harris.

A little more context on her Jamaican heritage in this new article, but still not a lot of concrete answers.
