Generic question on how Geni handles Locations, I am working with folks that lived in the 1500, 1600's born and died in England, Geni seems to automatically adding (United Kingdom) to "England" However United Kingdom did not exist till 1707. Does this matter to anyone? Just like the USA did not exist till after 1776. Am I missing something?

Linda Zimmerman the locations which are suggested by Geni actually come from Google. They are only based on currently existent locations.

Whether it matters is a matter of opinion, personally i delete "USA" from data fields pre-1776 but no one is policing the site to enforce any rules. Some users will insert "Colonial America" or similar into the Country field pre-1776 but personally I do not do this. The closest thing to a convention/rule we have is that birth and death locations should be recorded as close to the period accurate name as possible but burial location should be the modern format (in theory so that a descendant can visit).

England vs UK I can't really comment on, USA is a pretty clear line in the sand, European locations are a nightmare. I saw a discussion once (i think on Wikitree) about a location in Massachusetts, if i recall correctly the legal name of MA has swapped and changed 20 or so times but only a real specialist would know all the variants and applicable dates.
Again from memory Flatbush,NY and Midwood, NY (two neighborhoods in Brooklyn) were originally settled Dutch villages except at some point the names got swapped. So a person could be born in Flatbush, die in Midwood and be buried in Brooklyn, all without moving an inch!

Livio Scremin I hid your post, not because it was particularly aggressive but because this thread is not a place to criticize the behaviour of a specific user. If you feel strong about another user's behaviour use the Report function and you can bring them to the attention of Staff.

Alex Moes so you're telling me that if a (C) merge fails, & doesn't respond to UNMERGE alerts (WHY!?), when I write that it is no longer necessary to intervene because I solved it, (but sorry to not see the name of (C) merger in any of adjacent profile looking for source) .. if I do this another (C) hides the message /!\
..i.so sorry I didn't understand which of the two I should report ..to whom !? LOL :D

Livio Scremin Report who ever you want, report us both if you like.

No one has to justify their actions on Geni to you, you are neither police nor judge, the user's status does not change this. Obviously we should all be working from reliable sources and makiing changes and adjustments based on those sources and leaving information in the profiles so that others can see and understand what we have done and why.

But if a user chooses not to do that they are permitted by Geni to act that way, you calling out another user publicly for not working the way you want them to is harassment. Whether or not the user is a Curator is irrelevant.

Also, any user can set their privacy options so that their name is not recorded on the profiles they look at. This is basic functionality and not an indication of Curator conspiracy. Perhaps that person does not answer you because of some aspect of your behaviour?

Heeey....uhhhh....there's kind of an issue in one of geni's projects.

If you go to this project...

https://www.geni.com/projects/Great-Migration-Passengers-of-the-May...

...go down the page....right after George Soule profile....

you will see "Amos Eagle Elliston".

Correct me if I'm wrong...but isn't that one of the founders of geni?
Why is he on there as a Mayflower passenger???

Diana - Geni Bug. He’s geni profile ID #1 so it does odd things now & again. I’ll see if I can fix it.

Alex Moes that is, it is not that (C) does not answer me to do me a favor, (C) does not respond to the notice that someone kindly points out (C) mistake.
in this case someone should be happy that someone is giving internet babysitting for free.

your last sentence instead is more curious to extrapolate.. are you telling me that a (C) can ruin a documented work of national historical interest .. so .. just because they dislike a user!? :D

Thanks Erica. He is actually blood to me. I don't want him to get mad at me for anything. I didn't think he would have done it himself....an error, or somebody else's doings.

It’s tough being #1 but Amos can handle it. :). As a Mayflower passenger however he’s been replaced in the project with Capt. Myles Standish, "Mayflower" Passenger. Appreciate the find.
