James Forbes, of Hartford is not the same individual as Capt. James Forbes, of Caithness. According to Burke's Peerage: James, Capt., of Caithness, m. 1643, Agnes, dau. of George Munro, of Pitlundie, co. Ross, brother of Sir Alexander Munro, of Bearscroft, and d. at Culloden, 15 April, 1672, leaving issue." The Capt. James Forbes died in Scotland and so cannot be the same as the James Forbes of Hartford, Connecticut.
I have therefore disconnected James Forbes, of Hartford from his incorrect parents: Duncan Forbes, 1st of Culloden, Provost of Inverness and Janet Forbes.
