Geni currently shows 2 wives:

Lady Margaret De Mules

And Lady Margaret De Mules

Dolores Wood Comments:

Lady Isabel Attewode's father is said to have married two women named Margaret and with the same dates. I believe the two women as the same person. Is there any evidence to the contrary? If not, they should be merged.

Lady Isabel Attewode

Evidence?

I believe they are the same person.

I agree they can only be one person

Merged. If we get evidence there were in fact two wives she can be unmerged.

I revisited Lady Margaret de Mules/ Widow Upton and found inconsistencies of dates. They should not be merged.

Margaret de Mules b. circa 1380 - d. 1404/5, dau. Isabel (de Mules) Atwood b. 1404/5.

Margaret Upton (Widow), b.1380 - d. - - - - son: Thomas Upton b. 1415.

Thomas Upton could not have been the son of Margaret de Mules if she died in 1404/5. And therefor Margaret Upton and Margaret de Mules could not be the same person.

Agree, and fixed.

There are other inconsistencies in this family.
The dates shown for James de Mules are: circa 1366-1396.
The dates for John Upton are: circa 1379-1450.
The dates for Isabel/Isabella are: 1404/5-1499
And Isabel's brother, Thomas's dates are: 1415-1470
(There were also other children.)
If Margaret de Mules/Upton did not die in 1404/5, when her daughter was born, she could be the same person. And she would be the widow of James de Mules, not John Upton. Margaret would have married twice and James de Mules married 1 lady named Margaret, not 2. I have not seed any sources to verified these dates There may be documentation, but I have not seen it. Perhaps Angel would know where to look. His name has been given as a curator for this family. I think that over the years people have changed some of the information on this family.

From the dates given above, It is evident that Margaret (maiden name unknown)
(b. circa 1380 - d. after 1415) married 1st James de Mules (his dates circa 1666-1396)
No children were born with-in the time frame of his marriage and death.

Widow Margaret de Mules (not Upton) married 2nd, John Upton after 1396, and had children:
Dau., Isabel /Isabella (1404/5 1499) was born after the death of James (de Moels) de Mules

Son, Thomas Upton (1415-1470).
(There may have been other children in between the marriage of Lady Margaret Upton and the birth of her son, Thomas Upton.)

My conclusion is that Lady Margaret de Moels, (de Mules) is the same woman that married John Upton, and that since she outlived James de Moels, she would be widow de Moels not widow Upton. And Lady Isabel Atwood would be the daughter of John Upton. There are references to this family in Wiki-tree and Ancestry.

Sorry to come late to this discussion. There is certainly an enigma here. James married two Margarets' and Margaret married two James'. They are all from Cornwall or Devon and the dates are all close.

Just to muddy the water a bit more the entries in Findagrave.com will add further to any confusion.

Having taken a while to re-read this discussion, I can only agree with Dolores that John Upton was most likely the father of Lady Isabel , but why didn't she use the name Upton - maybe because the name De Moels sounded grander?

I think who ever copied it down mixed up the names or dates. We would need to find them in a book of peerage to straighten this out.

There were knights in the family, and nobles.
