Very interesting stuff. I wasn't all too familiar with this side of the story. He was always one of my favorite ancestors given that the English speaking world is what it is today because of William. Through his great grandson Henry II, another ancestor of a lot of people here on geni including myself, the house of Plantagenet would get its start in England. Like Mr. Byerman said, you can't choose your family, but still very interesting nonetheless.

My husband’s family the de la Boussac family who came across to Wales with William the Conqueror in 1066, they were given land in Monmouthshire Wales for their loyalty to him and they became known as the de Monmouth family.
Yes, I have looked at the video and yes it was well done, but it told a very sad story of our history.
It told me just how many people had to die for us folks to be where we are now, Even, he, William the Conqueror, who was also known as William the basted, he himself, realised and was very remorseful for what he had done, while he lay dying.

Yes I agree with you Bryn, "you sure can't choose your family", but it is still very interesting nonetheless and we have to add them on to our family trees.

His death was even more macabrd. He was terribly fat- described by one chronicler as looking like a pregnant woman. While on horseback he reined in very abruptly and his belly was pierced by the hard pommel on his saddle. This lager became gangrenous. The funeral story then follows. For those interested in if ancestors were with Wiliiam at Hastings, just google the confirmed co panions of William the Conqueror. There were 15 named. Then check Geni for possjble connections.

Hi there
I am your 19th cousin once removed.
William is also my 25th great-grandfather via more than one familial line.

William was my 26th great-grandfather via my Moseley \Ligon .... lineage more evil exist with my lineage! The lineage branches to the De Berkeley’s, it’s a wonder our future generations became so peaceful today compared to back in history. The women were quite calculating as well. I was shocked when I read about the women, my grandmother never mentioned all of the history! My sister defends them a bit explaining we didn’t live during the time period and therefore can’t judge everything they did as they most likely did as they were taught by their parents. She’s not condoning what they did, just saying we’re not defined by them, nor can we judge them. I can say, I’m grateful I exist today because of my grandparents.

Ty for posting Gaye, I’m your 13th cousin through my paternal Martin/ Chandler lineage

5/5/2019 at 1:27 PM

Very interesting. William is my 26th great grandfather, and Henry my 25th. I was never a fan of world history while in school, but as I’ve been researching my family, it has inspired a growing need to learn more.

Well I did as Karen Marie Soderberg Mills suggested and checked out the companions of William. A lot of intermarriages

it turns out

Robert de Beaumont is also a great grandfather (25th)
Eustace II, count of Boulogne (27th)
William, count of Evreux (30th)
Geoffroy I du Perche (27th)
William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford (28th)
Aimery IV, vicomte de Thouars (28th)

phew no path to Walter Giffard, Lord of Longueville

Hugues II de Montfort-sur-Risle (28th)
Raoul de Tosny, Seigneur de Conches (27th)
Hugues de Grandmesnil (27th)
William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey (27th)
Guillaume I Malet, seigneur de Graville (28th)
Odo, Bishop of Bayeux (29th)

Turstin (Toustaine) FitzRou le Blanc (FitzRolf), Standard Bearer in the Battle of Hastings (No path)

Engenulphe de l’Aigle (29th)
Geoffrey de Montbray, Bishop of Coutances (28th)
Robert de Mortagne, Earl of Cornwall (26th)
Rainald Wadard (29th)

Vital ?
Goubert d’Auffay?
Humphrey of Tilleul-en-Auge?

That is fantastic except that about 25,000,000 people can also claim bill as their 24th or 25th great grandfather
