This guy's is surely my ancestor as is his daughter Clementine who married a Leggett. My mother is a Leggett.
But how is he connected to Sir John Thomas Randolph? What docs are used to connect him?

I was about to ask the same question. I have Leggetts, and Swearingens.

Actually I’m disconnecting from John Randolph, Sr. if someone has evidence to support, they can present it.

This is all the Caswell County Historic Association database has on him:

Edgecomb County, North Carolina Record Book of Marks and Brands 1732-1809: "James Randal, son of Alexander Randal, A Crop & two Slits in their right Ear & a Flower ??????? over half of moon in y left."

The deed books of Edgecombe Co., N. C., record that David Averitt, planter, of Beaufort Co., N. C., sold a tract of 150 acres on the south side of the Tar River in Edgecombe Co. to James "Randol" son of Alexander Randol, planter, of Edgecombe Co., N. C., near the land of Alexander Randle and Averitt's plantation "bought of John Birney" for £6 proclamation money on 8 September 1759. This tract was sold by William Randol of Craven Co., N. C. in 1763

I have these notes but I don't know if they are accurate

Erica hiw were you related to the Leggett family?

1/19/2019 at 1:13 PM

Also Erica are you disconnecting due to lack of evidence? I would also mention that these type people generally hung in same circles. Consider the Swearingen family was affluent as well. Perhaps Alexander was shunned?

Geni, as a collaborative platform, needs to be conservative. We can be more speculative in private trees. The way we handle “possible / conflicting” historic profiles is by linking profiles within the “about,” and by discussion to consider the evidence.

https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=caswellcounty... Is published by the Caswell County Historic Society: http://sites.rootsweb.com/~ncccha/

So if they are saying “no evidence to support,” we need to supply evidence to support. :)

We had a Leggett discussion recently, let me dig it up and tag you to it.

Never mind - I’m confusing my Ligett’s out of Pennsylvania with Leggett out of North Carolina.

https://www.geni.com/discussions/184492?page=1

If the Geni tree is correct, Clementine (Randolph) Leggett is my second cousin 8 times removed.

I’ve been more focused on Swearingens, so I’m happy to put more effort now into Leggetts, if you can help, Mark Hopp

What would be great is if you uploaded as a document to the profile for Clementine Leggett

See https://help.geni.com/hc/en-us/articles/229705367?mobile_site=true

Very nice work. It looks like we need to
Assemble more Geni profiles together.

Thank you.

Do you have a Daniel Leggett of Bertie County with a minor orphan John?

Here’s a member of the tree apparently

Thomas "Scotch Tom" Nelson, Sr.

We’ve attached James R. Randolph, Sr. as Clementine’s brother. Would be interesting if DNA studies she any light - it’s close to where atDNA can be helpful.

1/28/2019 at 7:19 PM

I am considering DNA testing. Would that prove or disprove a link to the Randolphs of VA that are related to Thomas Jefferson's mother?

1/28/2019 at 8:20 PM

Mark Hopp Probably too distant, and anyway, Y DNA testing has already demonstrated they are different families. See

Email from Bill Randle, Y-DNA project manager for Randolph y-Dna Project. Six James Randolph male descendants have tested and DNA does not connect this line to any other Randolph line at this time. (FTDNA Randolph surname project: see the yDNA results, Caswell County group; should be freely accessible. Y DNA Haplogroup I M253

Interesting. There is also debate on the Thomas Nelson lineage too. I did talk to a Jack Cochran who is definitely related to me and he did his DNA. He said he is confident we are related to those Nelsons. Apparethe discrepancy is from William Jr. To Jonas Sr on that line but records have them in the same town during same period.
