Do you want a Swede in this thread? This is what I found (no direct relation, but through my Scottish brother in-law):

Sir William Wallace of Elderslie, Kt. is your sister-in-law's husband's 20th great grandfather.

Time to buy a kilt!

/Paul L

........we're ALL related....according to the 'Bacon's neo-gospel,' ...by seven degrees or another. :) :)

LOL, I think you're referring to the "t degrees of Kevin Bacon" which is a theory that says that every celebrity in Hollywood can be linked (not family related) to Kevin Bacon within six degrees.

For example:
Cameron Diaz is two degrees from Kevin Bacon because she starred in MINORITY REPORT with actor To Cruise who starred in A FEW GOOD MEN with Kevon Bacon.

Clint Eastwood starred in ABSOLUTE POWER with actress Laura Linney who starred in MYSTIC RIVER with Kevin Bacon.

Sally Field starred in FORREST GUMP with actor Gary Sinise who starred in BEYOND ALL BOUNDARIES with Kevin Bacon.

Tiger Woods has a video game called TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR 06 featuring the acting voice of Michael Sommers who starred in BANDITS with Troy Garity who starred in MY ONE & ONLY with Kevin Bacon.

Lady Gaga played Adelaide in her high school musical of GUYS & DOLLS which was originally played in the 1955 movie by Vivian Blaine who starred in FAST FRIENDS with actress Carrie Snodgrass who starred in WILD THINGS with Kevin Bacon.

MC Hammer wrote & performed CAN'T TOUCH THIS which was the end title credits song in HOT SHOTS starring Charlie Sheen who was married to Denise Richards who starred in WILD THINGS with Kevin Bacon.

Etc, etc, etc. Whether or not they may be DNA/genealogically related to Kevin Bacon is a whole other piece of pork.

For the record, I'm Kevin's 17th Cousin 1x Removed, which is still closer to him than everyone linked by degrees mentioned above. :)

According to the biblical Gospel we are all related to one another through Adam & Eve's 9th great grandson Noah, whose three sons Shem, Ham and Japheth are the founders of the Black African, White European, and Yellow Asian races, all other races being a mix of those three (Latino/Hispanic being a mix or combination of Spanish, Portuguese, African Native American and Hebrew, for example). However, we don't even have to go back that far to find our connection - recently a genealogical show pronounced that all living people can connect to one another through the people living around the 1st century (i.e. the time of Christ), and therefore virtually every single one of us is related to one or more monarchs.

[This piece of trivia brought to you by Retina Burn, the newest cleaning system that will leave your teeth so white it will blind everyone who sees your smile. Get Retina Burn! For that freakishly clean look!]

typo correction... that first line should say "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon"

Is there some reason we can't edit or posts?
Weird.

BTW.... On the subject of Kevin Bacon, it was not lost on me that one of Noah's sons was named Ham. It's like some weird cosmic joke from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!

Did you notice that in last night’s episode of “Finding Your Roots” they found that comedian Seth Meyers is a DNA cousin to Kevin Bacon?

So we have tree on that ?

Yeah, I saw that! I immediately checked his tree, and I found his profile, but it must not be complete because we're both cousins of Kevin Bacon but it said there's no connection between us.

Yes, all members of Homo sapiens are related in one way or another, we know that. But to actually be able to see, or show, the connections between me and a certain person is exciting. That is why I stopped using my old genealogy software and switched to Geni, to be able to link to people around the globe easily. An example; I watched the TV series "Vikings" and thought I recognised the name Ragnar Lodbrok somehow. And if the data in Geni is to be believed Ragnar is my 34th Great Grandfather. It made me watch the TV-show in a new light, being about my named ancestors!

Paul, you hit the nail right on the head! I've seen some folks get very jaded after doing genealogy for a while, after they've found multiple connections to major historical figures and presidents and celebrities; they often act unimpressed and offhanded with a "yeah, me too, so what?" when someone else excitedly discovers their connection to an historically notable person. That's really sad because it IS a big deal to make those discoveries. It not only helps to give us an INDIVIDUAL sense of our connection to the world and to the Past, it also helps us to realize that every Stranger around us is merely a relative to whom we simply haven't yet been introduced - and how much better would we treat one another when we understand that fact, how much kinder and more respectful, how much more might we be merciful to those who commit an offense, how much more would we put others before ourselves, and how much more would others treat us with kindness and respect or excuse our offenses? And quite to the point, how much more is that the ultimate understanding and fulfilment of the Golden Rule, to love your neighbor as yourself? That's the power of genealogy.

To discover that the ancient Ragnar Lodbrok from way back in the mists of time is your grandfather is truly something to be impressed by and proud of. How many countless millions or even billions of relatives do we have from ancient times for whom there is not a single record, of whom we will never ever know, even if we could live to do genealogical research for a thousand years? To have found records that connects so many of us to ANY individual should make us all proud and maybe even a touch humble.

By the way, you are my 25th Cousin 6x Removed thru our distant grandfather Sweyn II Estridsøn King of Denmark (my 30th great grandpappy).
Sweyn II Estridson, King of Denmark

Nice to meet you, Cousin.
-Jim

There we are – point proven! Nice to meet you too Jim – Cousin! And I agree completely with you statements above. If more people embraced this theer would be no race wars, and perhaps less conflicts in the world as a whole.

Sir William Wallace of Elderslie, Kt. is your 21st great uncle.

Carse,
Just FYI... this is an issue I keep complaining to Geni.com and Ancestry.com about.
Just as there is no such thing as a great mother or great father, there is no such thing as a great uncle, great aunt, great nephew, great niece - which are slangs that for some reason genealogists have tolerated in the professional fields and drives me crazy.

This is the correct terminology:
father/mother, uncle/aunt, nephew/niece
grand father/mother, grand uncle/aunt, grand nephew/niece
great grand father/mother, great grand uncle/aunt, great grand nephew/niece

So technically (and accurately), William Wallace is your 20th Great Grand Uncle.

But.. where is the actual paperwork to show and prove all of this?

You seriously need paperwork for that?

Paper work yes!!, right up to the person you call a grandfather, Seriously, wikipedia proves nothing, about their relationship to you or any one ,with out paperwork. How can you prove it? think about it, !you need well documented evidence of each person, leading up to the person you claim relationships to.. that is genealogy.

Greetings cousins, I had the same reason to watch Vikings, even if there is debate about Ragnar or his existence, I seriously wonder why in many sagas he would be mentioned, no reason to make up person, when you write a story down only few hundreds years after. There could have been more literature written down also that has disapeared. Anyway seeing the show, it gives me goosebumps, great to be related to those persons who also had wars against each other. Totally a different perspective to investigate history.
