I'd take a second look at the FabPedigree line - for once they may be onto something (if not just *on* something*). William THE Marshal's older brother John was a rather bad boy, but his escapade with his mistress was the main reason the Marshall name didn't just die out in the 13th-14th century like so many others.

*That* Marshall line has been much less studied, because most people are, of course, more interested in William....

Interesting tho this is Maven it doesn't seem to mention Ellen Marshall.... I wonder if she even existed!

...the Marshal estates – so carefully accumulated during Earl William’s career – were broken up and parcelled out among the heirs of his daughters. In 1246, the title of Marshal of England passed to Roger Bigod, the son of William Marshal’s eldest daughter Matilda. Through lack of luck, long life and fertility, the male line of the Marshal dynasty was brought to a desperately premature end.

It seems to appear, any if us who can claim descendancy would have to be from the daughters of William I.

William Marshal’s heirs were neither indolent, nor foolish, but they did lack their father’s inimitable ability to navigate the fractious world of medieval politics. Most crucially of all, they proved unable to sire heirs.....As a result, the Marshal estates – so carefully accumulated during Earl William’s career – were broken up and parcelled out among the heirs of his daughters.

There are some possible collateral connections - an uncle also named William and nicknamed "Giffard" (Chubby-cheeks), older rascal brother John and his descendants, and a presumed younger brother Anselm, who may or may not have left descendants.

While it's not as good as a direct line of descent, at least it's *something*.
