Detached today from Benjamin Chase. He and his wife, Philipa Sherman Chase, have a daughter, Sarah, ALSO a Master Profile, born on a different date in a different location.

I see that MyHeritage trees say that this Sarah is their daughter, but if so, one of the Sarahs has the wrong birth date / location and death date / location.

I'll do a bit of research but since they are both Master Profiles, I thought it might be possible that they should be two different people.

Sarah Hathaway is the daughter of Benjamin Case and Philippa Sherman Case.

According to the MyHeritage trees, the Sarah born in Freetown married Daniel Grinnell so I really do believe they are different people.

And there was already a Sarah Chase Grinnell, married to Daniel Grinnell, on Geni so I have merged them.

Daniel Grinnell, of Little Compton

It looks like Benjamin Chase, married to Philippa Sherman, had a daughter, Sarah, whose husband was Daniel Grinnell, witness:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chase-181 which cites Benjamin's will:

Dated 6 Sep 1730.[6]

to sons Benjamin and Walter
to grandson Benjamin Grinnell
to dau Bethiah Dunham
to dau Philippe Hathaway
to son-in-law Jacob Hathaway
to granddaughter Sarah, wife of Isaac Hathaway
to grandchild Daniel Grinnell

Sarah Hathaway was married to Abraham Hathaway (Abraham, John, Nicholas).

I do not believe that she was ALSO married to Nathaniel Talbot. Please join the discussion if you can find more information about when she died and whether she married a second time.

She was definitely NOT the mother of Abial Talbot who married her son Abel Hathaway supposely. That would have made them half-siblings who could not marry and she would have had to be married to Nathaniel Talbot first. I believe his wife, Sarah, was of unknown parentage. I have not found reliable sources although there are books about the Hathaways (Nicholas Hathaway is the first of this line) and Talbots.

Sarah Grinnell, wife of Daniel, WAS the daughter of Benjamin Chase and Philippa Sheran.

It's Sarah Hathaway, wife of Abraham, who is NOT their daughter.

To summarize:

There were two Sarah Chase profiles both originally attached to Benjamin Chase and Phillipa Sherman Chase. The correct daughter is the Sarah Chase married to Daniel Grinnell. The other Sarah Chase seems to be the daughter of a William Chase and was married to Abraham Hathaway.

There are remaining questions:

Is Sarah Chase Grinnell married to the correct Daniel Grinnell in the tree now? Erica Howton I think you curate Daniel Grinnell and it looks like he may have had only one wife.

Who is the mother of Abial Talbot married to Abel Hathaway? I have changed the mother to an unknown Sarah which makes more sense than that Abel Hathaway married his half-sister. Or that Sarah Chase Hathaway wife of Abraham was first married to Nathaniel Talbot.

Was Sarah Chase Hathaway married a second time, to Nathaniel Talbot, after the death of her husband Abraham Hathaway?

So Hatte, if you believe Daniel only had one wife, then is Lydia not his wife. They married in 1683, as per this record. One child Benjamin was born in 1670 to whom?
A little confusing. This is my daughter in law's family (I hope).

Excellent question, I see the problem since both wives lived long lives.

I'll have to research this.

If it helps any, Sarah Grinnell was married to a different Daniel Grinnell (son the 2nd Matthew)

Here is the will of Benjamin Chase (d 1730)

His daughter Sarah was already dead. He names his Grinnell grandsons. Their father Daniel was not the one who married Lydia Pabodie. I’ll try & find more on him such as did he remarry ...

Thank you Erica Howton!

I woke up this morning and started to work on the mystery of Sarah Chase's husband and you had solved it in the middle of the night :)

Thank you for the overview update on Sarah, nicely described.

This Daniel Grinnell’s sister married a Carpenter, which means a mention in Carpenter Cousins

This is an old post and I am not sure if you figured this out based upon the conversations I just read but here is the information I have. My son is a double Hathaway on both side (his father's side and my side. Captain Abraham Hathaway is my son's 7th and 8th grandfather depending on who's side you are looking at. This is the information for Sarah Hathaway on both trees.

Her Father was: Daniel Miller Chase
Grandfather: Aquila Chase
there are 2 Aquila Chases and the other one's family line died in England this one is related to Gerald Ford.

When Sarah Chase was born in 1690 in Berkley, Massachusetts, her father, Daniel, was 29. She married Captain Abraham Hathaway on January 28, 1709, in Dighton, Massachusetts. They had ten children in 18 years. She died on February 9, 1754, in Morristown, New Jersey, at the age of 64.

Kyle Kameron Hathaway - Hi - your Sarah Chase is this one:

Sarah Hathaway

10/5/2022 at 1:02 AM

Who is the Sarah Chase she is referring to? or is she confused with Sarah Goodwin the wife of Nathaniel Talbot? The profile you linked I believe to be incorrect. This is actually Kyle's mother we started this project when he was 10 he is not almost 21. He is a double Hathaway on both sides. Captain Abraham Hathaway is his 7th and 8th grandfather so Sarah appears twice for him. Once on his father's side and once on my side. He is also a direct descendent of Myles Standish Captain of the Mayflower. Fortunately due to that a lot of his trees are all ready very researched an vetted.

So we are back to trying to understand Sarah Hathaway father

He was not Daniel Chase, of Newbury

12/12/2022 at 1:05 PM

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chase-1927 Has her as a daughter of William Chase Jr. of Yarmouth, even though the narrative at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chase-1927 doesn’t support it.

FWIW, The Connecticut Nutmegger vol. 9. no. 1 has Sarah Hathaway b. in Taunton, not neighboring Berkley. Might help with where to search.

12/12/2022 at 3:59 PM

All clues helpful ! But it’s looking like she should be locked to “no parents” until more info is found.

Making Private User aware, she’s done a lot of work on the Hathaways.

Hathaway in America By the Hathaway Foundation calls Sarah Hathaway “Sarah unknown.”

https://www.familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/27298119?cid=mem_copy

And there’s a comment at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L87V-YWW

There is a Sarah Chase who was married to Francis Danforth in Nov. 1714 in Newbury MA, but in the Hathaways of America book there is zero documentation that her last name was Chase.

I’m ready to say the “Chase” name for Abraham Hathaway’s wife is unsupported.
