It's not a Geni problem, It is users who don't enter names correctly so they don't use the birth name field. It used to be Maiden Name but Geni got tired of hearing the feminine bitching and changed it

This should not be an option. I know of no genealogy software program that requires a marriage name for a female. That is only calculated by the software when a husband's name is entered. If it is unknown, then the field is left blank, but the software always only names her with her birth (maiden) name. If it did use the married name, it was always shown as just her first name. Even if she was a widow marrying again, the software either names her as Anna (Unknown) married to a John Jones or with her full maiden name if known. If she had been married first to a Smith, she would still be named with her maiden name and the software would create a male Smith husband for her. I know of no other online genealogy site that uses the married name for a female unless it she was unknown birth name that later married a 2nd time and that 2nd marriage was the earliest record someone had on her. Even then, most other sites would index her only under her first name as that is the way genealogy software works. If Geni allows this as policy, then I do not want to be a part of its membership.

Every documented name should be registered, - just avoid fabricating any names.

Your personal preferences should not be forced upon others, for example by not registering a married name even if it exist one or insisting that Geni should not offer any variants.

Let every user decide what to display , - that is why Geni offers the display preferences for names.

BTW: You have absolutely no registered profiles yourself, so I wonder how you make your conclusions about what Geni offers or not.

There are many different genealogy programs and each one is slightly different. Over the years I have probably tried at least 30 programs and each of them treated names differently. The better ones gave me an option on how I want to display a name.

Geni gives options on how you see names. It is within your personal account settings. You can choose to only see Birth Surname if that is your preference.

Of course, it will depend on what values the profile managers have entered into Geni.

To get the best out of the automatic searching that Geni provides - all name variations should be entered into the 'Also known as' field particularly if a woman married more than once or a man changed his name.
