King James IV is my 14th great grandfather, so going back, James III and so on should be 15th and 16th greatgrandfathers, but geni names them as cousins of uncles. The difficulty with my lines is that my mother and father are (unknowingly) 15th cousins and cousins in various other ways. Their lines intersect on many paths, so my ancestors are related to me in many ways. I wonder if the geni computer programming gets confused when there are multiple paths of relationships between two individuals?

Ruth, King James IV is my 15th great grandfather (- so hello cousin!!). I have had similar events happen when I "climb" a tree! I checked today and it actually went on up through the James', through the Robert Stewarts, onto Marjorie Bruce, Princess of Scotland and up to Robert the Bruce, King of Scots being my 22nd great grandfather. I was actually amazed! It generally kicks out to a 20-something cousin and how many ever times removed, etc. I think sometimes as people add new information it re-figures a path, per se, and then you check back a few weeks later and it has your path a different way. Don't feel alone. :)

Witaj Ruth !
Hello Cousins! This happens to me all the time!! It has happened with Edward IV (15th GF) and now with James IV(14th GF.)

Thank you for your replies. :)

This is not unusual

Hello cousins. I was amazed with the data shown on geni.com about my pseudo relatives. I am Braziliand and Cartesian: "To find the true iy is necessary to dout everything".

iy=it. Sorry, lapsus digitus.

Interesting to find possibly related members from all around the world. James IV of Scotland is my 7th cousin 13 times removed. It is important that we reference our sources and information. For example my maternal ancestry towards this relationship is in the three volumes of Os Luso-descendentes da Índia Portuguesa and original records available in the archives.

How many actually have their sources and references sorted ? Anyone can claim a connection using Geni, what is critical is the source/reference. Enjoy Factual Genealogy folks.

The samething happens to me. To get around this problem, I push the thumb tac, and if the previous listing was through my dad, then I insert my mother to see how they are related that way.

Hello Cousins! Just discovered King James IV is also my 14th Great-Grandfather, on my mother's side. Wish I had known this when I went to Scotland in the fall of 2015 and visited Stirling Castle.

In response to Shaun regarding sources, my genealogy on geni is sourced through census, birth/death/marriage certificates, and published books. I think geni curators work hard researching the lines further back. The interest in genealogy is an interest in finding a more personal application to historical facts. Knowing one's genealogy does not change anything about one's life, but it does give a perspective on the value of life and making it count. It is also nice to find distant relatives and make friends and connections.

Private User make sure you or the curators upload the records in sources. It is indeed nice to find blood relations. Genealogy brings alive elements of historical facts. Its fascinating how certain branches populated the planet. Folk who have just two names and their parents who have common names with others within the same location of migration (ex in America) should be careful as they may record fslse ancestry using accurate records such as birth/marriage/death, etc. This is where a detailed investigation is critical. Enjoy Genealogy.
