I wrote this in reply to a similar query about 4 years ago.

I have read your correspondence under Weems on My Heritage, and have co-incidentally been asked my views on the antecedents of Catharine Buttergask.  As I found your correspondence on My Heritage, I thought that you might like to add my analysis to your thinking. I too had made the link to Gilbert Gray of Buttergask.

This problem has taxed the most able genealogists, not least because Catharine was an ancestor of the Queen, through her Bowes Lyon connection, and many other members of the Scottish peerage. Andrew 2nd Lord Gray of Broxmouth married twice but none of the published genealogical tables mentions a daughter ‘Catharine’ (legitimate or illegitimate’) (see Stirnet –which I find reliable), and there is nothing in the Ruthven pedigrees to indicate that she was a Gray (except perhaps for the co-incidence of regular inter-marriage between the Gray and Ruthven families).  Yet Andrew’s second son (by his second wife, Elizabeth Stewart) was Gilbert Gray of Buttergask, born in 1480, making him a rough contemporary of of Catharine ‘Buttergask’, who was born in c. 1483.  Buttergask is not a recognised surname at this time so it is reasonable to assume that she might be his sister. If so you would expect her to take the name of her father’s property Broxmouth not Buttergask, presumably a secondary property made available to the second son.  Andrew lived on until 1514, when his eldest son Patrick became 3rd Lord Gray of Broxmouth, and he died without an heir in 1541.  Yet Catharine was married bef. 1500, well before Andrew’s death, so there was no reason for her to move in with her younger brother.  I agree that it is likely that she was Andrew’s daughter, but this is by no means certain.

Question for Justin ?

this is the correct lineage posted above
all the changes made; are actually detailed here
https://www.cosmosdawn.net/forum/threads/phony-lake-family-profiles...

I was once descended from Catherine Gray but something had changed and now I am descended from Jean Hepburn. I too wanted this fixed but I quickly stepped out of the situation because I did not know what I was doing and was told the same thing as what Robert said. So as of now, not descended from her....I don't think it matters. LOL I do think it should reflect the best representation of what the experts think.

another thing to check
is RUFFiN is NOT RUTHVEN
see changes on this one
