See the Revisions. There are two possible parents for Joseph Hastings.

Please provide any primary sources that support one set or the other.

I have disconnected one set just now, but can reconnect them if that is the correct set.

Hudson's History of Lexington identifies Joseph as the son (bap. Jul. 10, 1698, Lexington, MA) of John HASTINGS and Abigail HAMMOND,

I'll have to do more research on these families when I get home to my desktop. They are apparently all from Watertown, not Lexington.

Be sure and check "current" research if you can. Bond's Watertown may have been updated in NEHGS etc.

I can help on the Shepards in Concord, direct line. Of course I haven't tracked down. Randy Seaver may have posted in this area, check his blog & tree; I'm pretty sure Shepard intersects Dill and his lines.

Interestingly, I may be related to the Sheppards of Swansea, Wales who migrated to Massachusetts and from there to Salem / Cumberland counties, New Jersey.

yes, I remembered correctly. Here's a link to Randy S's tree on MyHeritage, I would feel comfortable reconciling to that tree

I don't think there's much doubt here: Abigail (Hammond) Hasting's first child was born a bit too soon to make the Puritans comfortable:
