In the newly published Paul Jacobi papers, Vol II:194, he writes: “Most probably, the Sephardic descent version arose in the Horowitz family for the same reasons as it suddenly appeared in hundreds of other Ashkenazic families, i.e. status enhancement, the desire to benefit from the higher social status then accorded to Sephardic, as opposed to Ashkenazic Jewry."
