Afonso I (1109-1185), more commonly known as D. Afonso Henriques, was founder of the Portuguese nation and the first King of Portugal. In 1122, at the age of fourteen, he made himself a knight, raised an army, and proceeded to take control of his mother's lands. On May 24, 1128, he defeated his mother in battle. On July 25,1139, Afonso I was proclaimed King of Portugal.
