I have spent several hours searching my web sources for his Austrian ancestors - to no avail. So I sent a help request to my Vienna archive guru - to see if she can find something, Waiting for response.

I read his biography recently, and even that whole research team couldn't do much in terms of stretching back. If anyone is interested, though, Ch. 1 & 2 of "Angry Optimist" gives what's known of his family history, and it gives a really rich portrait of some of his ancestors, especially his grandfather Nathan (from Shanghai via...Ukraine, I think?). I wrote that overview last November...I just MPed the profile. I'll see if I can find something from his state records here in Connecticut. Maybe we can get a mother's maiden name at least.

Wikitree has him as "Naum" Laskin...would that make sense? http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Laskin-19
