I have finished putting my ancestors into my tree, and now I have a possible match to the Global Tree:

@John Johnston
However, I'm not sure if I should merge them or not. Not all of the information matches. (Mainly the death location and some of their extended family.) Also, I have another source here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=markf..., which provides a much earlier death date.
I realize that we may have some inaccurate data. Unfortunately I don't have access to the original sources at this time. I am working with the notes that my grandfather made when he did his research 15-20yrs ago. (One of my uncles might have copies of some of the sources he found.) I tried to contact the managers of the other profile to ask what kind of sources they have, but they did not answer.
Could someone help me decide if this is a valid match? What are the chances that there were two couples with the same names in the same place and time? Thanks for your help.
It looks like a positive match - even more so on the son William and his wife. http://www.geni.com/merge/compare/6000000029782858761?return=duplic...
I can say for the location, but most of the online trees on MH say John died in Washington, Tennessee. There is also conflicting information on Williams wives. Many say Martha Scott, but others also have Mariah Larkin & Elizabeth Kay as wives. So, it looks like you have a match, but some research needs to be done to figure out the exact makeup of this family as there is conflicting information.
I would add the name without detailed information until you are absolutely sure. I would also cross reference common names listed with your common family tree names. It's better to be safe than sorry. There are too many "William Johnston married to Mary" entries. Also email qualifying questions to profile creators of matching names. Many profile creators are extremely knowledgeable and happy to assist you. You can also google the name for additional genealogy sites. Peter Verhoeven on Ancestry.com has a very close match to your name. Why not contact him on that site for additional information. Although Geni.com is much better than Ancestry.com it is good to cross check when you are unsure about a family tree member.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the tips. I'd love to make this a match, but I'm still concerned about the conflicting information. I will have to see what sources my uncle has in a month or so. Also, the managers of the other profiles did not respond to my messages. How hard would it be to undo a mistake like this? I'm scared of having to fix hundreds of profiles... ):
Looking forward to the reunion! I will definitely tune in online if I can't make it to the event.
After doing some more research, I think there are two people who are being conflated: My William Johnston, born in Pennsylvania, and a Colonel William Johnson, born the same date in Georgia. Although their parents have the same names, (What are the odds of that?) their wives and children are different. I checked on the green MyHeritage matches, and they are pretty much all one or the other.
It's too bad that Geni won't let me look at that information in more detail without paying more. I feel like I already paid for the site, but they want to charge me double.
Here is the reason the data is an additional cost: http://help.geni.com/entries/23390398-Why-aren-t-Record-Matches-Sma...
