I believe it happens when the father dies before the son is born.

Also of course Sephardic families name children for living relatives.

And believe it or not Ashkenaz could be a name they used for Sephardim.

His daughter married a Horowitz. They and Epstein are of Sephardic origin. That might say something about Moshe Ashkenazi's origins too. It was just ppost the final expulsion of 1492

I agree with both Hatte's hypothesis.

There is an interesting French Family Tree which also lists the father and son as Moshe, but qualifies that records before 1500 are not quite reliable, though the Horowitz family seems to be a bit of an exception.

My cousin told me about Ashkenaz a few years ago although I haven't seen verification. Schelly's project includes whichever people joined it such as my family -- Frankel and Franklin.

I thought Schelley's project was the result of DNA test results of these families showing Iberian origins?

Following the Ashkenazi surname ancestry back, it is indeed not Sephardi, but are direct descendants of Rashi from Treves, France.

Daniel Loeb mentions, 117 [44] Rabbi (TREVESIAN) Jochanan (Yahanan I) Ashkenazi TREVES (b. Abt 1265 Treves, d. Worms, Germany). Left France between 1285 and 1314 during the expulsion of Jews by Philippe IV and settled in Germany where he acquired the surname Ashkenazi.

The way the family Tree DNA projects work are the surnames are those who join the project. And the only criterion for joining that project is the suspicion of having Sephardic ancestry. And the names are likely the names of the peoe tested.
