What may be missing (and I wasn't clear about, perhaps) is that many of these "proposed matches" have been hanging around for quite a while.

I can't say why that merge ended up on the list, nor its "history". I can't say whether or not Jason or someone else proposed that merge -- or possibly a merge explicitly made somewhere else on Jason's branch. But being on "the list" means Geni has authorized the curators to validate the match -- and complete it if the match seems correct.

Lois: In this case the issue of a 'detached' branch is not in question because it seems (as best as I can tell from Revision history on some of the profiles) that Jason's branch that was originally created 'detached' (not part of the World Family Tree); that is, Priscilla & Dillon's family profiles were already a part of the World Family Tree.

Regarding 'returning to be a separate tree': Again, not apparently relevant to this situation ... but, as a point of note, while curators can 'undo' a specific merge (if it was done less than ~6 months ago), that does not 'undo' the 'connection' into the World Family Tree (in other words: the "big tree" flag, once set, can't be un-set by curators; only by Customer Service).

Just to clarify one possible additional source of confusion:

The "list" is one of Proposed merges; those which would show with a "+" on the Tree View ... ... not the same as the "possible Tree Matches count in a blue square" that shows up along with the MyHeritage Smart/Record Matches.

Lois,

It may be (and no doubt is) wrong for Geni to change the goalposts and merge private trees, if they promised not to. But I do not have much sympathy. The central purpose of Geni is to construct a World Tree. People who want to construct their private trees have lots of other sites on which to do so. It is maddening to merge, or request a merge, with some profile 200 years ago and get no reply, but just a lot of "private" profiles. Even when one can duplicate the whole lot oneself, what is the point? "Private" profiles, outside people now living, simply defeat the central purpose of Geni and should never have been allowed. My private profile of Charlemagne, with a son Ghenghiz Khan, a grandson the Emperor Napoleon, and great-great-grandsons Adolf Hitler and Josip Stalin, may make sense in intellectual terms of dictatorships; but not in genealogy.

Mark

Mark - re: "People who want to construct their private trees have lots of other sites on which to do so." - Priscilla was not asking for a Private Tree - she was asking for a Tree for herself and her family members. If you know of other sites which are excellent for that, it would be kind to mention them - but in a separate discussion so we do not further hijack this one.

If you want to further discuss "The central purpose of Geni" - suggest you do so on a Thread I started way earlier - " Are Geni ‘s Goals Compatible - Or Incompatible?" - Geni started with TWO Major Goals, one of which was clearly interacting privately with one's family, including sharing private info on one's family (including the deceased in one's family) with one's family (heck - they did not even have such a thing as Public Profile till way later - and altho World Tree was mentioned in some material from the start - no mention of Public Profiles till way after Geni was under way!!) --- To the best of my knowledge, that is still a Goal of Geni - but as I say, off-topic for continuing the discussion here - so continue in this thread https://www.geni.com/discussions/98590 or possibly create another

I have created a separate thread - "Process that enables curators to merge isolated trees into the big tree [new c. Feb 2015]" - https://www.geni.com/discussions/145235 - since I believe it may well deserve more discussion - but also agree it should not be further hijacking "Attention Curators please assist ..." -

Re: "If you know of other sites which are excellent for that, it would be kind to mention them - but in a separate discussion so we do not further hijack this one. ..."

We do mention it constantly and there's no reason "not" to mention it again here.

MyHeritage allows one to share their tree with invited members only.

This is "not" the way the Geni platform is constructed, although notifications that are more personal ("news and notifications") such as anniversary etc are easily managed through family group settings here:

Martin RhNegativ

The issue is Marthe Richard's daughter Marthe Millon (Blondeau)

I created a new Daniel Blondeau (relinquishing management to you), & moved Marthe over to him as father. Then disconnected Marthe Richard from the other Daniel. Hopefully this is correct & what was needed?

Daniel Blondeau is giving me a problem finding you. :(

Martin RhNegativ please request management of the profile above. Merci.

thank you madam Howton the small detail i got is aparently that branch was in martinique ,,but need better data

Private User,
All four 'merge compares' and surrounding duplicate profiles have been merged. There are however many 'data conflicts' left to be done. It is possible that I might have missed some duplicates since some managers have add their profiles in different ways. It was interesting for me to be around profiles of people from India :-)

rvk, fixed

Rvk - done

thanks Rafi

I have to share this finding. Henry Snow married Mary Frost. Their son, John, named his son Frost And Snow.
Here is the DAR record:

SNOW, FROST AND
Ancestor #: A204606
Service:
VIRGINIA Rank: PRIVATE
Birth:
CIRCA 1759 ORANGE CO VIRGINIA
Death:
ANTE 3- -1852 SURRY CO NORTH CAROLINA
Pension Number:
*S7570
Service Source:
*S7570
Service Description:
1) CAPTS JAMES HEAD, ISAAC DAVIS, COKER, LT ROBINSON, COL LINDSEY, MILITIA;
2) ALSO GUARDED BRITISH PRISONERS

OK, back to work everyone.

I needed that! Thanks Jim.

Correction: Frost And Snow from the revolutionary war is actually Jr. He is the son of John's son named Frost and Snow. Jim

This merge will never be completed without Curator assistance, because it is an Abandoned Tree with no replacement manager.

I have found quite a few duplicates for historical figures, but unfortunately I am not allowed to merge them:

Arie I just checked a couple out of your list and noticed that a lot of the profiles are locked MP's. But I have not checked them all to be honest.

I meant to say they are locked mostly due to bad merges, you will need to contact the curators of the profiles

Ard van Bergen Those are all done now.

thanks a lot, Terry! Still struggling with your tablet?

yes!

When it comes to major historical profiles, one's best bet is to follow their descendants until one finds a point that one can work from. But many people just put up profiles willy-nilly, and a lot of duplicates are still left over from the Mass Gedcom Upload era.
