George,
Could you not add https://books.google.fr/books?id=8VP4npxABlEC&pg=PA280&lpg=... as a source as well, and ad some comment why the info on The Peerage is wrong (like you did in the message http://www.geni.com/discussions/142108?msg=992644 above)
Right so, Maven. In fact, the guy who developed and maintains The Peerage did a fantastic job, no doubt - and he explains himself that one has to handle the information with great caution. It's a one-man's job that mainly consists of compiling databases from others. It's really a 'tertiary' source.
Personally, I never refer to The Peerage as a source. In fact, if one does, one should refer to the sources that The Peerage refers to for each entry, as we then get closer to secondary sources. Of course, the primary source is the ultimate goal.
In the concrete example above, the works of Père Anselme have been criticized for some clear fabrications of his. But, a large part is considered of great value. He had access to primary sources that have not survived, so in many cases Anselme becomes the 'primary' source'. Even then, one needs to be cautious. But, it beats tertiary sources.
Please note that the author himself confirms that he does not consult non-English sources for his compilations (though he makes exception for Europäische Stammtafeln). Tough!
Job, I'll do some extra on adding hyperlinks to the material.
Requesting multiple unmerges of:
William Hackley Sams
I went a little too fast and had at least one bad profile in a stack of 4 or 5. If someone can unmerge all of them I'll re-work it one by one so the bad profile can be cleaned up before merging.
It may be a good idea to unmerge on the wives as well.
