It wasn't a wrong merge as such, it's just that I found an ancestor in common and when I looked again had all these people that I don't even know.....It's going to be difficult to pinpoint one, I can't delete them. They may be distantly related but I do not want them in my tree.
Dear Susan,
Ard van Bergen has completed the merge on Christina Margaretha Susanna van Rooyen.

Congratulations! Your family tree is now connected to the World Family Tree. Your family tree is now connected with the World Family Tree. You can now collaborate with millions of users on this single, shared tree.

Kind regards,
This was the email I received to confirm the merge. Dpn't know if it helps, I would rather add them one by one if I want to add them to my tree, did not expect to get upwards of 400 people.
(No Name), being connected to a bigger tree does not mean you have to view it or get notifications about it.
There are at least two tools in your "Account settings" area:
1. Family Group
http://www.geni.com/account_settings/family
2. Notifications
http://www.geni.com/account_settings/notifications
Try it.
A couple of other items which can help 'de-clutter' the view you are interested in:
In Tree View, the blue Preferences tab at the bottom allows two (relevant) items (among many):
-- view direct ancestors only
-- view 'N' ancestor and 'M' descendant generations of the current "focus" profile.
That latter can be especially helpful (e.g. limiting to, say, 3 ancestor and 1 or 2 descendant generations.
Keep in mind that the fundamental premise of Geni is that we all help build and maintain *one* World Family Tree -- with only one profile per person. Not my tree. Not your tree. Our tree.
can someone please unlock this profile.? Eels Riencks Bolta
And all the others that are locked around her so I can added ancestors to them .
hello curators
can you disconect
Lazarus of Magdala

Dorothy Jane Smid: Please start a *new* discussion on the DIscussions tab of the profile for Eels Riencks Bolta with the information about specifically what you see as missing and the evidence for it. This seems to be a genealogical issue to be dealt with by Discussions referencing the specific profiles. Thanks!
Mike Stangel - Please clarify. You had said it was fine for Curators now to merge folks to the World Tree without first gaining permission because most folks were thrilled, and Merges could now be undone, - So if folks did not like it, they could have it undone.
If I understood you correctly then Susan's request to have the merge which connected her to the World Tree undone - see http://www.geni.com/discussions/142108?msg=1068247 and http://www.geni.com/discussions/142108?msg=1068255 -- should have been granted - or at least granted if folks could not convince her to like the merge -- Yes??
I have tried those links suggested and I still am not happy with the amount of people it shows in my tree. I want to decide who to include and who not to include. That is apart from the merge issues that have arisen it is becoming too much . While I get the concept of a world tree, it should be then a separate entity and I should still only have who I want on my tree and not folk I don't even have a connection with except maybe through a very tenuous link..
I would still prefer the merge to be undone, if it can't then I will delete my account, which will be a pity as the site itself is very useful.........
Please help with this profile - Gjurd - Gjurd X. He has been merged with a wife who lived 200 years earlier. Several trees has been linked to her - it must be wrong!
(No Name) I'm sorry to be so blunt but you seem to be on the wrong web site. From the very beginning Geni has been about building the family tree that we all share -- massive collaboration on one tree of the world. If you don't share that vision, using our site is going to be forever frustrating to you. Itai Meshulam, please undo the merge if you are able -- even if Susan decides to close her account and delete her tree, it will be cleaner to do so if it's not connected to the big tree.
Very well if that is the attitude I will take the steps to delete my account.
I just don't see the point of having a whole load of people cluttering up my tree making it hard to see what is going on because the lines are so long between the people you loose track of where you are. I said I don't mind information being part of a global tree, but not if it is going to make it more difficult to see my own ancestors etc.
It is just sad that that seems to be the attitude of what is an informative and easy to use site. I will continue to use those sites that allow me to chose whom I want to add to my tree or not.
Thank you
Susan - it doesn't seem like you have tried adjusting your view as suggested.
What do you have it set to? My tree is set to three generations. If I want to see more distant ancestors I can "walk" or "jump" to them, or switch to horizontal pedigree view.
I'm on (other) sites every day, they all require a view adjustment, and offer optional ways to view the tree, Geni is no different in this regard.
(No Name) I'm sorry that you are so upset about this, but I really don't understand why you say that "it is going to make it more difficult to see my own ancestors"
We're all into genealogy to find ancestors and/or distant relatives of whom we didn't even know the very existence. By working together, as we do on Geni, it is possible to find many more than anyone can ever find on their own
yess that may be true but I don't want to have to spend most of the time looking where the lines lead as the tree is now so big and cumbersome that it takes so long to find where you are. I also want to be in some kind of control as to what happens to what I add to my tree. Now I can't even delete people that I originally added to my tree. I am not really interested in ancestors that have no connection to me, some of the names that now appear on my tree I have never heard of, nor would I have considered adding them to my tree as I do not consider them close enough to do so. When it starts getting to being "removed" 1, 2 or more times, then they aren't really your ancestors in my opinion
Susan - (almost) everything you complain about will be solved by adjusting your tree view. Why aren't you trying it?
You can't add new ancestors on those lines because they already exist.
If you wish to contribute to an existing profile, there are a number of methods:
- upload documents
- start discussions from the profile
- edit in details into the "about"
- use "contact manager"
And simply disregard those profiles that do not interest you.
I followed the link that was provided to change the aspect and changed it to Direct Ancestors (it was the selection that I thought would show the least people) but that also took out siblings that I actually wanted there,or something nothing changed, so unless the link that was provided in a post didn't work, but the little box assured me that it would be adjusted shortly. Now I see that I have 1775 people in my tree and my husband had 1333, that is completely ridiculous, it is unmanagable, and then to close my account, it doesn't delete my tree I have to leave all my information on here, it just gets sillier by the minute............

Preferences tab
Suggestions
- un tick direct ancestors only
- Generations to display
--- ancestors (set to 2)
-- descendants (set to 1)
Tree layout
- standard (but try the different views, perhaps you'd prefer a different one)
The family group is defined by you. So if you don't want you & your husband to show as large a grouping, change it from the defaults.
That is done here:
http://www.geni.com/account_settings/family
By default, Geni shows
Your Family consists of your 4th cousins and closer plus their current partners
Use the "drop down" box to what you wish; I would suggest "immediate family" would be most comfortable for you.
This is now getting ridiculous each time I go back to the tree I see there are more and more people being added. It is therefore no long my tree, I cannot delete the profiles I added because they are now connected to other people. I asked for the merge to be undone.
I am also not able to delete my tree if I so choose, most of the other sites give you that option, that if you choose to delete your tree, which is really your information you have the option to do so on the understanding that the action cannot be undone. I do not feel comfortable leaving information that I have researched and added left where I have no control over it . I have no objection to sharing information that I have gathered, but it does remain mine. Perhaps the person who said I am on the wrong site is correct, and I am trying to take steps to remedy it.
(No Name) You have your father and mother, they could be set as private if they are still living, including their eventual living parents, livings siblings, your eventual partners or living children etc. Above them people are in the field of public domain, they do not belong to just you no matter your personal view or lack of interest in distant relatives.

Regarding Eels Riencks van Jarla profile I've requested be unlocked.
I if you will notice there are now two of her on the tree. All I want to do is merge two the profiles as the same person along with her husband ...there are two of him as well as of yesterday.
That original profile of Reincks was locked because of a dispute regarding her ancestors and surrounding family members back in 2014. I just want to make the tree right and NOT have two of the same people on the tree.
Here are the links of the "Locked" profiles I'm requesting become unlocked so I can merge the NEW ancestors I've add yesterday to the tree.
Eels Riencks Bolta this is the new one of her I added yesterday Eels Riencks Bolta
her Husbands new profile I added yesterday Poppe van Bolta
it would be much easier if all the profile were unlocked . That way I can merge them all as the same person and be done with it.
Here is a profile you can open her tree view to see that there are 2 of the same people that should be merges Ydt Bottes Jaerla
I do have proof that the Ancestors I've added are the correct ancestors all ready within the profiles that I added yesterday. It's even as a " hint " on MY Heritage, not to mention all over the internet If the Manager of these profiles ever took the time and bothered to do any research regarding this family she would have known to add more info such as birth and death date plus where they lived etc... But she didn't add anything because she clearly didn't do any research therefore Riencks's profile stays empty along with the rest that she locked.
It's been 2 years and I have been very patent with the profile manager of that locked these profiles. I have also been very patient with the other managers of the members of the families surrounding her. I even messaged them and asked to help me make the correct changes. They have yet get a response back to me and I am done waiting. I've given them one month and it's been long enough.
I highly doubt starting a new discussion forum about this matter will be of any use at this point in the game. So please can you just unlock them so I can continue adding to my Ancestors branches? .
I saw Mike directed Itai Meshulam to, if possible, undo the merge (No Name) did not want.
Itai - have you tried to undo it? Or still hoping Susan will change her mind? Or??
Aznijar bin Ahmad Yazid and Private User - re: "Wholly and strongly supported" and "+1" in reference to Mike's comment -- am pleased to discover I am not the only one thrilled by his direction to a Curator to undo the unwanted merge of a Separate Tree into the World Tree.
Ital is on Israeli time. I'm sure he'll give it a try when he can.
Undo merge is still a rough tool that requires cleanup after, this is why only curators currently have access to it. It's not easy! I still hold my breath that it will work properly. :(.
Our directive is that Geni Customer Support will assist in large matters, so Susan can certainly contact them directly if we're not meeting her needs. It is Friday afternoon in the US & there is a big genealogy conference going on, so i would expect a little patience with Geni staff as well.
Susan can have her "ancestry" disconnected by anyone (or by herself) by posting a link to the profile she wishes as her "tree top."
Of course if she tried to enter new ancestors to those profiles they will match existing ones and be merged ....
