Documenting this Elizabeth Lee (of the many of them) as post humous daughter of Hancock Lee of Ditchley & Sarah Lee wife of Zachary Taylor Sr. & therefore the grandmother of President Zachary Taylor.

However, there might be another possibility.

Before I get into it, let me just say that researching Lee's of Viriginia is an especially formidable genealogical task, and I give great credit to anyone venturing into these muddy waters.

Elizabeth Taylor was the older sister of two Lea brothers (James & William) who were legally minors in 1731.

The family tree site for the Caswell County (North Carolina) Historical Society describes the record trail this way:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=caswe...

James Lea, the orphan, who in 1731 is identified in the records of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, as one of three orphans of John Lea of King & Queen County, Virginia (The other two orphans were William and Betty.). In 1731, John Key was appointed by the court as guardian of this James Lea, which means that at the time James was under fourteen years of age. James's brother and sister, William and Betty, were allowed by the court to choose their guardian, which means that they were over fourteen but not yet twenty-one years of age. In 1754, this James Lea was a witness to the sale of a small parcel of land by Thomas White and his wife, Betty (whom we believe was James's sister), to the church wardens for the new church on East North East.

They chose for their guardian: Zachary Taylor (born 1707). He would then have been about 24 years of age.

The above article by Ben L. Rose states that Thomas Creathers was the guardian of William Lea. However, the following records indicate that Zachary Taylor was the guardian as of 5 October 1731.

Spotsylvania County, Virginia
Guardians Bonds, Will Book A

£50 Zachary Taylor, guardian to William Lee, orphan of John Lee, with Thomas Chew, security. October 5, 1731.

£50 John Key, guardian to James Lee, orphan of John Lee, with Zachary Taylor, security. October 5, 1731.

======================

A researcher, some years back, put it like this:

"I realize the published data that Zachary Taylor m Elizabeth dau of Hancock Lee but Elizabeth Lea & Zachary Taylor grew up together in K & Q where their fathers were the wealthiest & leading citizens & Zachary Taylor at 24 yrs of age was guardian of John Lea's daughter Betty and son William Lea ..."

===================

I should also note that this Betty Lea's mother (or stepmother?) is argued to be Ann Taylor, daughter of James Taylor, and therefore - his aunt, and Betty would be his 1st cousin.

The parentage of Ann Caruthers is not considered proven.

But to me, the guardianship of John Lea's orphans by Zachary Taylor born 1707 is compelling evidence that they were of the same family.

Also tagging Private User to take a look. I think the next step is to understand the marriage of Betsey Lee & Zack Taylor, if we can.

Erica,

Do you want the correct information on this area that I have acquired? May save you some time and headache. :)

Let me know. I may post it here anyways for reference.

Erica Howton,

As with many or all of the Lee family, there are several Elizabeth Lee's around this time period. I really like that you state right off the bat how difficult Lee research can be. Here is a 4 generation of Pres. Zac Taylor's ancestors Ahnentafel (hope this helps - otherwise I will not butt-in.) :):

Ancestors of Zachary TAYLOR President

Generation 1

1.
Zachary TAYLOR President, son of Richard TAYLOR and Sarah Dabney Strother was born on
24 Nov 1784 in Montebello, , , Va. He died on 09 Jul 1850 in Washington, DC. He married
Margaret Mackall SMITH on 21 Jun 1810 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. She was born on 21
Sep 1788 in Calvert Co., Maryland. She died on 14 Aug 1852 in East Pascagoula, Mississippi.
Notes for Zachary TAYLOR President:
Name: Zachary TAYLOR Sex: M Birth: 24 NOV 1784 in Orange County, Virginia Death: 9 JUL
1850 in Washington, D.C. Burial: Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky Note:
Note: Interesting Fact: Zachary Taylor spent July 4, 1850, eating cherries and milk at a ceremony
at the Washington Monument. He got sick from the heat and died five days later, the second
president to die in office. Fast Fact: With Zachary Taylor, a career soldier first attained the
Presidency. Biography: Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories
wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened
secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force
rather than by compromise. Born in Virginia in 1784, he was taken as an infant to Kentucky and
raised on a plantation. He was a career officer in the Army, but his talk was most often of cotton
raising. His home was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he owned a plantation in Mississippi. But
Taylor did not defend slavery or southern sectionalism; 40 years in the Army made him a strong
nationalist. He spent a quarter of a century policing the frontiers against Indians. In the Mexican
War he won major victories at Monterrey and Buena Vista. President Polk, disturbed by General
Taylor's informal habits of command and perhaps his Whiggery as well, kept him in northern
Mexico and sent an expedition under Gen. Winfield Scott to capture Mexico City. Taylor, incensed,
thought that "the battle of Buena Vista opened the road to the city of Mexico and the halls of
Montezuma, that others might revel in them." "Old Rough and Ready's" homespun ways were
political assets. His long military record would appeal to northerners; his ownership of 100 slaves
would lure southern votes. He had not committed himself on troublesome issues. The Whigs
nominated him to run against the Democratic candidate, Lewis Cass, who favored letting the
residents of territories decide for themselves whether they wanted slavery. In protest against Taylor
the slaveholder and Cass the advocate of "squatter sovereignty," northerners who opposed
extension of slavery into territories formed a Free Soil Party and nominated Martin Van Buren. In a
close election, the Free Soilers pulled enough votes away from Cass to elect Taylor. Although
Taylor had subscribed to Whig principles of legislative leadership, he was not inclined to be a
puppet of Whig leaders in Congress. He acted at times as though he were above parties and
politics. As disheveled as always, Taylor tried to run his administration in the same rule-of-thumb
fashion with which he had fought Indians. Traditionally, people could decide whether they wanted
slavery when they drew up new state constitutions. Therefore, to end the dispute over slavery in
new areas, Taylor urged settlers in New Mexico and California to draft constitutions and apply for
statehood, bypassing the territorial stage. Southerners were furious, since neither state constitution
was likely to permit slavery; Members of Congress were dismayed, since they felt the President
was usurping their policy-making prerogatives. In addition, Taylor's solution ignored several acute
side issues: the northern dislike of the slave market operating in the District of Columbia; and the
southern demands for a more stringent fugitive slave law. In February 1850 President Taylor had
held a stormy conference with southern leaders who threatened secession. He told them that if
necessary to enforce the laws, he personally would lead the Army. Persons "taken in rebellion
against the Union, he would hang ... with less reluctance than he had hanged deserters and spies
in Mexico." He never wavered. Then events took an unexpected turn. After participating in
ceremonies at the Washington Monument on a blistering July 4, Taylor fell ill; within five days he
was dead. After his death, the forces of compromise triumphed, but the war Taylor had been willing
to face came 11 years later. In it, his only son Richard served as a general in the Confederate
Army.

Jim--do you have any information on Hancock Lee & Mary Willis? I have found that
they had 17 children (I dont think all are thiers) but they have our family names too,
with some new ones. Thomas, David (new) Noah (new) Elizabeth, Ann T.
Dorothy (Dolly) ( this name from Hancock's 1/2 brother's William's wife Dorothy
Taylor) Mary, Richard, Nancy R.Margaret, Irvine (new) Deligeta (Deliala) (new)

d Oct. 12, 1860 Pettis MO. in Madison County untill 1840 census in Pettis County
MO. 1840.
Most of Hancock II 's ch. went to Missouri
There is no information on Richard & Elizabeth's son Richard,
b bet 1773-1800
Our Richard and Celia Settles? he was b 1778 VA
Nothing on him eather except he was b in VA and m Ceila in 1798. No information. (
before marriage)
William Jr Lee b May 14, 1704 Richmond VA d 1764 VA. m Mary Bruce Thornton
Dec 16, 1728 Richmond County Va
she m (1) Mark Thornton he died 1721
thier ch. 1 Mark b 1710, 2 John b 1715, 3 Thomas b 1716,

(2) William b Bet. 1730-1738
(3) Richard b ??
(4) Sarah/Sary/Sally Lee b ??
(5) Elizabeth (Betty)
the other boys listed had to be grand children, living with them. Here is why Mary
would have been 65 years old when the last one was born,
(6) Peter b Jan 30, 1749/50
(7) Mark b abt 1752
(8) John b Dec 22, 1757
total 14 children some with the same names.
This William connects but Mary # 2 does not match for the last 3 children.
Plus why would she have 2 John's, 2 Mark's and 2 William's
I think I need to go back to the information on this William .
If you have anything on this William Jr. son of William Lee and Dorothy Taylor.
please fill me in.
Talk to you later Ellie

So extracting - it looks like a few different record spellings (naturally) for the Elizabeth Lee who married Zack Taylor of 1707

Zachary Taylor b. April 17, 1707 Caroline Co, VA d. WFT Est. 1744-1798 m. Abt. 1729 Elizabeth Leigh. WFT # 3326:

Zachary Taylor b. April 17, 1707 Orange Co, VA d. Aft. 1767 m. Aft 1737 Elizabeth Lee WFT # 3215

Child: Zachary Taylor b. WFT Est. 1697-1761 d. WFT Est. 1785-1846 m. WFT Est. 1737-1799 Elizabeth Lee (A Twin).

=====

Elizabeth (twin) would be the daughter of Hancock Lee.

The Leigh spelling seems to point more to the King & Queen VA Leigh > Lea family.

The other men named in the guardian application of 1731 (Baylor, Key) seem to have been the husbands of older Lea sisters, in the K&Q Lea line, whose given names are not known to us.

Are there any other affiliations between the Hancock Lee family & the James Taylor family?

Are there affiliations between the Hancock Lee family & the John Lea family? "Betsey" Lee was "orphaned" at birth - where was she raised?

"Betty" Lea however was not "orphaned" until a teenager, so lived - close to Zack Taylor.
