George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll, was born on 30 April 1823 at Ardencaple Castle, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He was the son of John Douglas Edward Henry Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll, and Joan Glassel. He married, firstly, Lady Elizabeth Georgiana Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, daughter of George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland, and Lady Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana Howard, on 31 July 1844 at Trentham, Staffordshire, England. He married, secondly, Amelia Maria Claughton, daughter of Rt. Rev. Thomas Legh Claughton and Hon. Julia Susannah Ward, on 13 August 1881 at Danbury Palace, Essex, England. He married, thirdly, Ina Erskine McNeill, daughter of Archibald McNeill, on 30 July 1895 at Chapel in the Bishop's Palace, Ripon, Yorkshire, North Riding, England. He died on 24 April 1900 at age 76 at Inverary Castle, Argyllshire, Scotland. He was buried at Kilmun, Cowal, Argyll, Scotland.
He graduated with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.). He succeeded on 25 April 1847 to the titles of 4th Baron Sundridge, of Coomb Bank, Kent [G.B., 1766], 11th Lord of Kintyre [S., 1626], 10th Baronet Campbell, of Lundy in Angus, co. Forfar [N.S., 1627], 5th Baron Hamilton of Hameldon, co. Leicester [G.B., 1776], 18th Lord Campbell [S., 1445], 8th Earl of Campbell and Cowall [S., 1701], 8th Marquess of Kintyre and Lorn [S., 1701], 8th Duke of Argyll [S., 1701], 8th Viscount of Lochow and Glenyla [S., 1701], 17th Lord Lorne [S., 1470], 17th Earl of Argyll [S., 1457] and 8th Lord of Inverary, Mull, Morvern and Tirie [S., 1701]. He held the office of Chancellor of St. Andrews University 1851-1900. He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 19 June 1851. He held the office of Lord Privy Seal 1852-55, 1859-66 and 1880-81. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 4 January 1853. He held the office of Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow 1854-56. He held the office of Postmaster-General 1855-58. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) on 2 May 1856. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1862. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Argyllshire 1862- 1900. He held the office of Secretary of State for India 1868-74. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1870. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 22 October 1883 and was able to retain his membership of the Order of the Thistle. He wrote the book 'The Reign of Law.' He was created 1st Duke of Argyll [U.K.] on 7 August 1892.
In politics, he was considered a Peelite until 1855, a Liberal from 1885 to 1886 and, thereafter, a Liberal Unionist. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.
