Oddly enough, Cerdic's name isn't Saxon - it's Old Brythonic (Ceretic, which evolved into the definitely Welsh Caradoc). There have been all manner of speculations over the centuries as to what to make of that. (One popular theory, found primarily in "historical" Arthurian fiction, is that he was Vortigern's son by Hengist's daughter Rowena.)
We owe the variant "Cedric" to Sir Walter Scott having an attack of fumble-fingers when he set out to write "Ivanhoe". :-D
