DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE IS STILL FAMILY OF PIETERNELLA IN MAURITIUS?

Sorry, no idea. Let us know if you find out, Iambertus

Probably not. All the VOC people left the island, either to go to Batavia or the Cape early in the 18th Century.

Not everybody can leave - surely some stayed behind - but how closely they related to her ... one will have to research and find out :-)

Everyone HAD to leave. The VOC abandoned its post on Mauritius in 1708.

Pieternella and her husband and children came to the Cape where they settled at Stellenbosch. They both died at the Cape before 1 Dec 1714. Her daughter Catharina married Roelof Diodati and died in Batavia. Her son Daniel died in Asia.

The book "islands" by Dan Sleigh gives a very good idea of what happened to them.

Thanks guys; good discussion - Jansi, I added that to her profile with the link and the fact that you'd contributed it. Go and check that you're happy with it, but I thought it was a great answer to Iambertus' question.

We so often talk about 'Eilande' that I wonder if we shouldn't have a project to go with the book?
