Where to start

I am new to this and I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. My maiden name is Rotenberg and rumor has it that we are some how related to the Gerrer Rebbi's family. looking at his family tree on Geni, it looks like there are a lot of Rotenbergs out there. How can I go about researching more into my family? thanks.

You've started in the right place. You should request to join the Ger Rebbe Project at http://www.geni.com/projects/Gur-Ger-Rebbe-Dynasty/224 and post a discussion there as well. If you can add any more dates or places to your tree, that might help make a connection.

Your possible relative Dan Rottnberg has written one of the seminal Jewish Genealogy books Finding Our Fathers.

I would start by researching the generation that came to where you are and tracing where they came from. Then you can begin to find out which Rotenbergs are yours. Also, jewishgen.org can be very helpful in finding others who are researching your family. The free Mormon website https://www.familysearch.org/search is another great way to get information when you know a bit about the people you are searching for.

Good luck,

I recently wrote an article which helps explain some of the more intermediate parts of the website.

Excellent job Jarrett Ross (112-1701-241-22). I am definitely going to refer people to your article. Are you coming to the genealogy conference in Boston?
