Apparently the identity of the 2nd (possibly 3rd) wife of Joseph Ball of Epping Forest, the mother of Mary Ball, is a bit of a mystery.

As far as I can tell, this is what is known.

- She wasn't Mary Spencer; there is a Mary Spencer who married a different Joseph Ball however.
- She wasn't Mary Montague. That was a popular speculation for some years, but there's a convincing (to the Montague Family Association) case made that makes it unlikely.
- it is possible she was Mary Bennett. However the Bennett couple she had been attached to in the Geni tree was impossible, having died before she was likely born (her birth date is not known).

What is known was that she was the widow of a Mr. Johnson & had at least 2 children by him before marrying Joseph Ball. The daughter Elizabeth Johnson is named Joseph Ball's will, and John Johnson & Eliza/beth are both named, along with Mary Ball, in Mrs. Hewe's 1721 will.

That's right - she married a 3rd time to Richard Hewe's.

The Geni tree should reflect this & I've added notes in the profile overviews. However document upload & citing facts is more than welcome - for instance, the wills of Joseph Ball (1711) and Mrs. Mary Johnson Ball (1721).

A page uploaded from a "google book" search would be best.

Help appreciated.
