Thanks Judy. I don't know who added it, but thought someone might want to put it to rest :-)

Plantagenets, aka Angevins, house of Anjou.
[from Old French, literally: sprig of broom, with reference to the crest of the Angevin kings, from Latin planta sprig + genista broom]

I checked my memory with wikipedia (French) and the nickname Plantagenet comes from the strand of flowering broom that Mathilda's 2nd husband, Geoffroy V comte d'Anjou (not king),, used to put on his hat to embellish it. And no need to go to Latin, plant is still plant and genet is French for broom.

Jean Francoise , you are correct. And because of that Henry the second always worn some in his hat.

Darn it kicked out on me mid sentince I was saying the house of Angevin ended with Henry the second and the house of Plantagnet started with the second Henry via his fathe Geoffrey. Several refence books and history books written on both families. Very intersting!

Foulques V was King of Jerusalem, so it is from that title that the Angevins were in occasions referred as Kings.
