Relation to famous people

How did you find out? Once, I found out I was related to Judy Garland (Gum) , but now can't for the life of me figure out where I found the link.

Hi, Stacey ... when you go to that person's profile, it will either show you your relationship -- or ask you the question. Click on the question, and Geni will go searching for a path between you and that person's profile.

The key is that you have to find that person's profile.

Most of the "famous people" have been designated as "Master Profiles" (they will have an MP icon by the name). If you find a famous person without an MP designation, you might need to check for more similar names because there are sometimes duplicates which haven't been "merged" (connected) into the "Big Tree" -- or they might just be a different person with the same name.

Dan, - finding a relationship path is a Pro option, but now and then Geni a post a message about your path to famous people.

One other thing (which I just confirmed in my connection to "Calamity Jane") ... even if Geni's search doesn't find a path directly, it might still exist -- and that can (at times) be because once a search is attempted, Geni does not immediately "refresh" the search if other connections are made later.

For instance, I was not initially connected to Calamity Jane; Geni's search did not find a path.

In looking at her ancestors, I realized that a few 'greats' back there there some duplicate profiles which had not be merged. And, it turns out I *did* have connections to some of those "matching" profiles. So, after asking the managers of those profiles, they all got 'connected' together.

But Geni still would not find me as connected to Calamity. So, what I did was "walk down" from an ancestor which Geni *did* know the path to me. When I got back down to Calamity's profile from those ancestors, then Geni happily reports that she is my 17th cousin 6 times removed.

That's helped me, thanks! Calamity Jane is your 14th cousin four times removed. Calamity Jane. It looks like she has at least one ancestor in the American Revolutionary War.

Dan Cornett is right - many time you have to find a Profile - that has the Path - and go through Each of the Ancestors or descendants to get to the Famous profile.

Sometimes you have to - Exchange a Path(s) - with other Geni users - and work your way through the Profiles - to the famous one.

This can only be accomplished via Public profiles - so it may Stop at your last Public profile (grandparents, etc.)

Thanks for contributing so many absolutely marvelous gems of information! I'm first going to make everyone in my tree public, then I'm going to go from there, working on the paths. I actually had no idea Geni was able to do so many things. Wow.

Stacey Shannon Mayer ... please do NOT make any living persons public without their permission!

It is also prudent to not make any person public who still has living siblings.

Some also do not like deceased parents as public because of the potential for identity theft.

Personally, I use a "saved" Geni search for "deceased, private, born before 1930" of the profiles I manage to quickly decide if I want to make them public or not. That list is also nice in that one can change from private to public (or back) with a single click. Check out the "List" option under the "Family" word at the top of the Geni window if you haven't done so yet. (The other saved search I use often is for "public, living" to make them private as appropriate!)

Peter: The way I quickly found my way "back down" to Calamity was to start with her profile, then switch to view the "horizontal tree" (direct ancestors only). That made it rather easy (from another window / tab) to find an ancestor I was "connected-to", then "walk down" without any guessing as to which descendant to click on next.

Dan, sounds good - I will have to try the "ancestors only tree".
Trick is - finding the "common relative" name if you're Not aware of it - between you - and the Path of the Famous person.
Sometimes I get Collaboration, Family group invites - just because my Famous Relatives web page. Since it took some doing - sometimes I ask the requester - to share Path(s) of his/her Famous Relatives - making it a win-win :)
