Absalom must have lied

If the William Hooper who signed the Declaration of Independence was the father of Absalom Hooper, and the signer is WELL documented to have died in 1790, why did Absalom lie in sworn testimony [in his federal pension file] and state that his [Absalom's] mother was a widow when Absalom ran away from home to join the Revolutionary army? There is an existing muster document showing Absalom in service in February 1778, which was 12 years before the highly publicized death of the Signer.
